A Step towards Rectifying US Detention Policy

In a step towards mending the Detention Policy of the US, President Barack Obama administration has planned to place 23 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials at the largest detention facilities. According to ‘The New York Times,’ this step is initiated to inspect the management of these detention centers.

The initial aspects of this step are still unpolished, and there are speculations that the plan might take months to get initiated. According to the newspaper, the program would include reviewing federal government’s contracts with more than 350 local jails and private prisons, with the motto of “consolidating more detainees in places more suitable for noncriminals facing deportation — some possibly in centers built and run by the government.”

Further, the government is planning to hire a health expert who would take care of the medical aspects of these detention centers also.

We’re trying to move away from ‘one size fits all,” stated John Morton, assistant homeland security secretary who heads the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Detention on a large scale must continue, he said, “but it needs to be done thoughtfully and humanely.”

Humanity” stands beyond all the aspects! This can be regarded as a step towards overhauling the Immigration Detention Policy, but I would call it a step towards Humanity!
