Every year, before the school board examinations, announcement of results and then admissions to colleges, there are these familiar photographs of students in front of schools and colleges in all prominent newspapers.
Anyone who follows these photographs closely will notice something very funny. The photographs always show students and institutions of elite private schools and colleges. Favourite are St. Thomas Girls School, Jesus and Mary School (and College), St. Columbus School, Modern School and St. Stephens College. This is DELHI but from what my friends tell me, situation is no different in other major cities. What is wrong with students from other schools and colleges? Where do students from Government and Central schools are left out in overall scheme of things? They are children of lesser god whom editors and journalists do not find glamorous enough to be covered? And what does this mindset indicates?
One, it confirms that our society is highly divisive and it makes clear distinction between rich/financially comfortable and struggling classes of ordinary people.
Two, it addresses glamour as the key factor that grabs the attention of readers.
Three, it confirms that these children of lesser god actually need to work harder than those from influential background to succeed in life. For sure, society perceptions are not going to make it easier for them.
Four, this is a challenge for Government institutions to improve on its infrastructure and study facilities so that at least they are stimulating for child growth, if not luxurious.
Five and most important, these children of lesser god should understand that, at the end of the day, they are heads taller than the so-called “Fortunate Photographed Souls” because life teaches them to succeed with less and work hard for things that are out of reach. They have a better purpose to life. Only they should remember to photograph a government school child, if life and destiny makes them an editor!

Well I am a firm supporter of the point five. Have seen many successful children who come from very poor background and they go too ahead in their career. I have seen many a times the toppers in the IIT JEE, IPS, IAS exams are from the poor families, and no one think about them before their success.
it is right,, faces of “innocent-government-school-goers” are hardly visible in any of the mediums,, be it newspapers, TV or what so ever..
such a pity.. media is all glutton for hype and glamor!
The difficulty in India is that everything is so competitive (due to population related issues) that it is these children of lesser god who need all the support that can be given to them. Media instead does the opposite. It promotes those who are already privilaged. This needs to change.
It is agreed that those coming from poor families have learned their lessons well in advance. They are aware and have witnessed some of the gruel realities of life. So, they have nothing to lose and so, their biggest weakness becomes their biggest strength.
It is unfortunate that we are a country having high tourist attraction, tourists coming from all over the globe & they click, record & carry with them what is real side of India – undernourished kids, beggars, poor infrastructure, along with other attractive things, whereas Our own media, is unfortunate enough to shut it’s eyes to such children who rather are setting examples for others, who give a positive lesson that will is important, to succeed, not just the resourcefulness.
Sadly, the children of lesser god only find some resort in documentaries / commercial cinema by foreign directors who might see a Slumdog Millionaire in them.
@Ajay Sharma, You are right, but let me tell you one thing, it is not only media who did the work of promoting the privileged, rather every one do. Colleges who claims that they are the best, ask them to give the best result after taking the admission of the children who got less than 80% marks. If they are giving the admission to those candidates only who are already getting 95%+ marks, then why not their results will be great. The same with the coaching centers which take the admission test and check the marks of the student and then only give the admission to the best students only and then they claim that we have such a good results. Our 9 out of 10 students got the rank in IIT Jee and blah blah. Ask them to give the same result with these so called children of lesser god.
These children have been into difficulties not because the lord is unkind to them but it is merely a test of people around them. If you appreciate rich, you must learn to appreaciate the poor ; balance is the key. Well, Lets make efforts to bring change within ourselves and then your legacy will certainly be carried forward.
