“Chak De India” – the movie came out some years back, but I am sure that a majority of you still remember these lines from it… “aapko apne hi desh mein koi mehmaan kahe to aapko kaisa lagega..?” (How will you feel if you are regarded as guests/outsiders in your own country?) The lines were uttered by two North-Eastern Indian women hockey players during their registration process in the Women’s hockey team of India. Remember the scene now???
Surely, the movie dealt with other major issues but this particular line caught my attention. And yesterday, when I was reading this incident that a North-Eastern girl was badly molested in Munirka (New Delhi), my belief strengthened that girls from North-Eastern states like Mizoram, Assam, Tripura, to name a few are still treated outsiders in their own country. This victim from Mizoram was waiting for her younger sister, just when a restaurant waiter approached her and started passing lewd comments at her. It was when she started shouting; the neighbours came into her rescue and saved her from the brutal deeds of the culprit!
This is not the first incident which marked any North-Eastern girl as a victim. One can count thousands of such occurrences in the past… Some call them Nepalis, some address them as Chinese or Tibetans, but is it really their fault that their facial features do not match any typical Indian woman? Every day or the other, these innocent girls, who come to metropolitan cities to make their career, have to face lousy comments in some form or the other and have no choice but to ignore them, each passing day.
Well, it is accepted that these “so-called outsiders” are not good at communicating in Hindi, but does this mean that they are not Indians? The fact is that in most of the North Eastern states, English is the most widely spoken language and they hardly converse in the national language of India. But, once they land at the core of the country, where Hindi is widely spoken, they should be little empathetic and show their willingness to learn a bit of the language.
Not only in Delhi, similar incidents are reported in the everyday newspapers in other Indian states as well. North-Eastern people, especially girls are not safe and secure in these states. However, the rate of these incidents is significantly higher in Delhi. Why? Are Delhiites harder on these people? Are they more discriminating than other Indians? Believe it or not, the discrimination on North-Eastern people is a sort of racism!
The fact that a majority of these girls come alone, stay alone, make them a soft target, be it for molestation or some other brutal crime. Why don’t we guys understand that having unfamiliar features does not make them outsiders and they are as much Indians as our mothers or sisters. It’s high time that we should start addressing these issues and commence making some really HUGE changes in our mindsets!

i really believe that north eastern girls are treated as outsiders in our own country,, ppl treat them as foreigners, discriminate against them and sometimes address them as tibetans or chinese, which further creates a hassled situation for them!
People do not even realize what they are doing with their countrymen (North-Easterns) despite witnessing what Indians are going through in Australia…
These type of incidents happen some times, but I don’t think that it is any how related to racism.
My personal definition of “racism” is ANY situation where a fellow human being is subjected to different behaviour because of how they look and talk. Incidents of ANY kind – be it to male or female – are racist if the basis of the incident is color, looks, food and language and all such incidents should be deplored. Without going into overall politics of the situation, it is critical that locals in North east do not support the insurgency movement of any kind. That is the reason why nobody is investing in the region, which it turn leade to unemployment – in the region – in the first place. Being next to China, this region has critical importance to India and will have, in coming years, a very significant role to play in India’s dominace in multi-polar world.
somebody has to really address this situation
it is high time that action is taken…
And it is not just about having unfamiliar features..
It is a stereotype issue that has been going on since ages…. Just as people from haryana as considered uneducated, muslims are considered terrorists (my name is not khan took out this issue brilliantly,….similarly…. north eastern girls are considered to be easy going!
These stereotype issues need to be curb down!
Correction: It is not that only (north eastern) women that are treated as above but (north eastern) men as well. Lets STOP discriminating on GENDER, but certainly north eastern people are taken as inferiors; just because they look different.
Well, lets discuss what is a solution to this problem rather than discussing the problem and cry on the whole situation.
@amir- solution is higher literacy and strict laws that are actually eforced against those responsible for such actions. Examples across thw world have shown that such incidents are brought under control – in the short run – by law enforcement agencies and in the long run therough literacy campaigns. And I do not agree that people are taken as inferior in this instance. They are taken and treated differently- which by itself is wrong.
@Aakanksha, very valid points – there are some sterotype notions that need to be killed and addressed for India to go on par with developed world.
yes… its high time to take some action upon… hats off to the writer for this issue.. i jz cant forget the dialogue from the movie.. n it had the big impact since then n after reading this article.. that thing came back… its their country too..
Very well written post. We have been blogging for years about discrimination of NE people in India, but I don’t think just blogging about it etc will make an impact as the majority of those who are guilty of passing lewd and bigoted racial slurs are not bloggers. We need the mainstream media to step in to address this nature, but with no report about that part of the country, the ordinary man is still ignorant of the existence of Indians who do not belong to the Aryan/Dravidian race.
For example, just a couple of days ago, Mizoram broke the world record for the largest and longest simultaneous dance event as we danced to our cultural dance called “Cheraw”. BBC and CNN (International) even reported, including many other international media agencies, but here in Mumbai, B’lore, Delhi etc, nothing was mentioned in any of the papers or television. That just brings in that isolation feeling even more, because had it been some dance troupe from Maharashtra, West Bengal etc breaking this record, it would be all over the National newspapers.
Stereotypes can be abolished only when there is maximum exposure about a particular culture or its people. The main reason we stereotype is simply because we don’t know anything about that person, or know too little. Nice article once again. Peace.
@ajay sharma,
I have worked among north eastern and observed that most of their colleagues thought of them as inferior, they Question their abilities and thought that they cannot do an excellent job. They can perhaps only do a job at a restaurant. This gives birth to a pathetic thinking.
I agree literacy is important but the Govt must take steps in introducing them. Rest of India is unaware and see them as foreigners trespassing borders.
very well written,,,,,not much has been said or written about this aspect,,,hatts off to the writer
I have seen many people making comments on them, and I really feel bad. I think the reason behind all this is that they remain separate from the normal mass. They have their own living style and they never want to change. I guess this is why they won’t be able to mix with the normal people, and the unsocial elements take benefit of all these.
We have to acknowledge certain facts about NE females
1, They are good looking
2, They are broad minded
3, They have a progressive attitute towards life.
4, They would like to dress like nicely like west
All these points only tell us that they are a liberated lot like west and not neccesarily like typical indian women who is time & again reminded to be within control & limits put by the typical indian male.
in my opinion this is the problem in place like delhi, where you get majority of typical indian male & equaly numbered typical indian female, who envy these females from NE and in order to take out thier resentment , make bad comments & similar acts.
though , not impossible but quite difficult to change.
Nice post Ajay, knowing there are people like you who abhor racism, stereotyping, discrimination etcetera help us tolerate all these things that we encounter almost everyday !!!!
@ alok vats: what about unity in diversity ? Isnt this the very reason why we are so proud to be an Indian ?
Do you really think and believe that we need/have to change our living style so to be accepted as Indian when we already are ?????!!!!!!!
this is gud intiative..m against it…thanks nice post bro…
@Daniel Mizo, Dear Mizo, I never said that they should change their living style, rather they should mix up with us too. Why is is happen that you people mix with only the people from North Eastern region? Is it our fault?
Coming out of the political aspect of the issue as @ajay commented, I would like to support @aakanksha and others in the stereotypical aspect of our society. The best example is @Alok Vats, who is still of the opinion that it’s the fault of north-eastern people for not mixing up with group of other regions as a reason of the problem.
I think we have never endorsed a free-society without racial discrimination or sexual harassment. In case of north-eastern women, in fact, these two together goes against them- a double discrimination. I am not sure about ‘literacy’ because being a student of Delhi University; I have seen such biased psyche. If in the university campus people call them ‘Chinks’ or ‘Nepalis’, what one would expect from far-flung areas?
Another aspect, I may put here is that regional groupism… you can find it everywhere: from politics, profession to schools and colleges. This is the main reason that north-eastern people don’t find it that easy to interact with us; it’s our part to make them comfortable by eliminating such misperceptions based on suspicion.
well said deepak
Ofcourse we are racist……………….. people of Delhi are racist against all other communities ………… be it South Indians, Eastern Indians or N.E. India………. I hate all form of racism.
Have you ever been in N.E. India………… particularly in Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram………………. if you are a non-tribal (non-manipuri, non-naga ….. non ethnic people) it would be tough for you to spend a single day without fear. Here in Delhi a Manipuri girl can chase a molester and handed him to police. But in N.E. don’t dare to do this the local people will kill you even if you think about this action, if not then police will put you behind the bars. Non Tribals are routinely suffering in the hands of local tribals & governments………………. that is the reason we are witnessing a mass non-tribal exodous from N.E. India to other parts of India. Situation in N.E. is same like Bangladesh where non-muslims are suffering hell lot of problems, insecurities, fear for their lives.
Please focus on N.E. racism also, bring out some news articles about N.E. racism against people from plains (rest of India).
Again being an Indian I hate all form of racism.
ya rite
Artical is good and we all know how the discrimination is faced by the NE people…so please dont blog it,rather take some incietives…please everyone have to understand there responsibility to become an INDIAN n a GOOD HUMAN Being..
