As far as the statistics are concerned, the report shows that 37 per cent of the office workers have confirmed that they have shared bed with their bosses just to enhance their career. No matter how practical or career-minded a woman is, it has been believed that she needs a “sponsor” at some point or the other to climb the steps of her career ladder at one stage or another.

It is not something which is hidden that Sir Don Bradman is the greatest batsman that this world has produced. When it comes to Indian batsmen, he regarded Sachin Tendulkar as someone who could match up with his batting style, and someone in whom he sees himself.

What to say about Sehwag too? He is a gem of a cricketer and people who regard him as the clone to Sachin Tendulkar, should know that he has his own identity too! Independence Day is around the corner and as we all know that this day our ‘golden bird’ was set free from the cage of British rule after two hundred long years of struggle. Freedom means a lot to everyone and if I say that the basic nature of man is to be free, then I won’t be wrong in saying that. A very beautiful and meaningful poem by Rabindranath Tagore called ‘Where the Head is Held High’ very nicely defines the real meaning of freedom. In his poem he prays to God to be in a world which is not divided and the knowledge is free.

But not everyone can have the same definition for freedom and its significance in one’s life can vary from person to person. We live in free India but how many of us really feel that that we are living in a free country which gives us the right to select our own government?  I guess very few of us truly value this which includes me as well.

What is freedom? If I would ask this question to some homosexual person, maybe his answer would be the expression of his sexual orientation in a more liberal way. I am sure there must be many people in our society for whom it will be very difficult to express what they are and feel because that may not be very acceptable in society.

But what freedom means to me? In this article I would like to take the freedom to express what I feel about freedom. Sometimes I feel that I am caged, caged in what, I really don’t know. Sometimes I want to yell at my professors for giving me third class lectures but I am caged because I know that my marks are going to come from them. I know it is sounding very funny and it does make me feel like a caged bird. Anyways let’s look at some other aspects of freedom. Many a times, I feel like going to those beautiful places which I read in my Literature books and just spend loads of time with nature. But I can’t because I have the responsibility of making a career which would feed me and then my family. While preparing for my exams, I hated learning those stupid answers which I knew is a short-cut to get the degree but I had to because that secures my future. That time I feel that my freedom is lost.

I am leading a life where I don’t have the freedom to fulfill my wishes and desires and do the things which I want to. How can I accept that I am living in a free country? I don’t see my freedom anywhere……….! But one of the statements of my painter friend whom I always felt that he is living so freely made me think again about the idea of mine for freedom. He said that freedom means responsibility and I was thinking that how can freedom means responsibility? In fact freedom itself means going away from all the responsibilities and living as a carefree person.

I know my ego factor comes in between but I have to accept that he is so correct that freedom means to be responsible.  Aren’t we all are born as free birds only, who have the freedom to make choices and decisions in our own lives? Sometimes I feel that my cage is my own creation…..and not imposed on me by some other person. Sometimes I myself put limitations on me and underestimate my own potential. Freedom is about making our own decisions and then taking the responsibility of those decisions as well. Like I can yell at my professors but then I have to take the responsibility of that behavior as well. We are living in free India but have we taken the responsibility for our own nation?

Different people have different understanding for freedom. For some, it may means to be able to freely express one’s own individuality and feelings in society. We can have different opinion for freedom but what ultimately is common between all of us is that we all want to be free. So on this Independency Day, happy Independence Day to all.
