Lindsay Tanner, who occupies the portfolio of Australian Finance Minister, went on to challenge the nation’s newly elected Prime Minister Julia Gillard for her stance on immigration. The Prime minister reportedly, dumped Kevin Rudd’s idea of achieving bigger population through migration, who said the nation should not aim at achieving huge population, rather focus on skill-oriented migration.

The Finance Minister recently opposes Julia Gillard’s intention at the Australia Unlimited 2010 Summit, organized by the Global foundation, who said that the nation should consider welcoming more migrants, not less. He also stressed that the natives of the nation should be friendlier to migrants and they must welcome arrivals with open arms in order to discard the unfriendliness. He believes unfriendliness among communities often leads to hatred!

Days after becoming the first woman Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard expressed her intentions regarding immigration. There have been reports that immigration accounts for the biggest share in Australia’s huge population of about 22 million. Analysts’ reports also say that the nation is likely to achieve 36 million by the year 2050. Going by this reports and opposing her predecessor Kevin Rudd’s idea of ‘Big Australia’, the new Prime Minister said that the level of migration would be lowered in the years to come.

It is believed that the Finance Minister’s views on immigration are influenced by nation’s prominent businesses. Many employers are highly concerned about the Prime Minister’s intentions over implementing stricter immigration regulations, because they fear such regulations would make businesses face skill shortages in the future.

Are you aware that there are certain BAD species/breed/genre of employees which are present in almost every office? Let us skim through their varieties:

SLOW STARTERS

Just because these people reach late at office, start their work late, these folks are always seen the busiest of all! Here are some of the ways to identify them in office:

  • You will always find them saying “Let us do this work tomorrow.” (Dude, what’s wrong in doing the work today?)
  • When ever there is some office party or seminar, they are always ready to attend this because it gives them a reason to skip work and leave it for tomorrow. (As if someone else will do their work!!!)
  • Project Deadlines are of no use to them!
  • They are always decked with a poor and casual attitude towards work.
  • Sometimes these people have inner fear of losing their job and power.

CRIBBERS

These people love cribbing about the amount of work load they have (god knows they have it or not). How to search them in the office crowd:

  • The moment they will step in the office, they will say “Aaj bahot kaam hai.” (Lots of work to do).
  • Even during the informal chats, you will find them saying that they need to stay back after office timings (No matter whether they do a Facebook or an Orkut after office hours, god knows). But in reality, they always come late and leave on time…
  • They love to keep you waiting for the lunch or a cup of tea, just because they are busy cribbing about their work pressure, but never type a word on the keyboard.
  • Why do they crib? May be because they want to be boss’s favorite and want their boss to know that they are BUSY!
  • These guys are busy, may be because they know how to make finance by doing freelance work in office!

THE OFFICE BULLIES/ CREDIT STEALERS

They will always bully the shy people at office environment or the weakest of them all! Additionally, they will burden their subordinates with more work pressure, shredding their work load on others. Here are some of their qualities:

  • These people will get attention for the work, the idea for which was given by you the last night!
  • When ever you will go to them and ask any question, they will rather cross question you on your abilities.
  • They will be friendly with intelligent people so that they can steal ideas from them.
  • They are always found impressing the boss and meandering in and around his cabin for no use. “Sir, I have done this work, please check! Sir, I mailed you this document in the morning, please revert.” I mean they are found disturbing their boss every single minute, just to show their presence! Oh! God, how much they work!
  • If you are shy and weak, they will humiliate you in front of others!
  • These guys look for opportunities to step upon their colleagues and make a way up on the ladder (by hook or by crook!)

PAID FOR NOTHING!

These guys come late to office, roam here and there, fag in the balcony, have their lunch, sit on the reception for hours and hours, chat with other employees, have tea and go back to work! That’s what they are paid for! Nice job…

  • These people are hated by others but liked by the boss! May be that’s why they are in the office in the first place!
  • They are seen downloading every latest song and movie from their system, but their work report will show how busy they were attending to the client’s online and reverting back to their queries.

ATTENTION SEEKERS/FLAUNTERS

Consider this situation: You are not able to do a particular work. You ask this guy to help you. He ignores you. When you get criticism from your boss for doing that work wrong, this guy barges in from nowhere and will show you the solution for doing it right! Boss impressed, your image is ruined, and this “attention seekers” is HAPPY! Case finished! Here are some of their other qualities:

  • These guys remain aloof and try to hide information stored in their brains.
  • These guys don’t like to work under authority and love secrecy.
  • They are never friendly towards employees but love to impress boss secretly.
  • These people love to flaunt their work, even if they have completed just one document in a day! LOSERS!

TIME PASSERS

When ever there is some meeting, they love to stretch them by wasting time! They will talk about irrelevant issues without doing their homework in advance.

  • They come to their presentations without ample preparation, but won’t leave a single stone unturned in making irrelevant presentations.
  • One meeting is not ample for them to discuss the topics. They will keep calling up for “meetings after meetings” to resolve a simple issue.
  • They love to exaggerate issues.
  • Their work report will say “Task not completed, courtesy meetings.”

GOSSIP LOVERS

Women employees are called “gossip mongers” but these days men are also not left behind! You will find this breed near the washroom, gathered around the water cooler or chatting non stop over a coffee break. (Sheer waste of time!)

THE NAYSAYERS

These people love to say NO to everything they are asked to do! Yeh kaam aaj nahi ho sakta… (This work won’t be accomplished today)

No matter how important the work is, there is always a big NO on their faces. These are those people who are the bad performers of their team and end up ruining the overall performance. They hate taking initiatives and love to hide in the crowd! Their negative thinking allows them to have a negative attitude towards work.

BUTTERERS

Buttering is the best thing that these people can do! Good for nothing, but still flaunt as if the burden of the whole office is on their shoulders. They will boast about their work load when ever the boss will pass by their side. They will provide gifts and appreciations to their bosses, just to be on their “good” list! But these things don’t last long. Right?

We have nice employees on the office too! But who wants to discuss them? Bad employees are always a matter of discussions! Right folks?

Canada has modified its list of 38 occupations, reducing it to only 29. The new occupation list for Canada federal skilled workers program would be implemented from 26th June 2010. These 29 new occupations form the current occupations in Canada which are in-demand for the foreign skilled migrants*. However, this list is not applicable to those applicants who have an employment offer in prior.

The new list of 29 occupations for federal skilled immigrants excludes the IT managers and supervisors, accountants and financial managers from the earlier list of 38 occupations. At the same time, occupations relating to Business Services and Management as also dentists and social workers have been included. This is excellent news for general category managerial and supervisory candidates. Professional working in following occupations will gain through this critical inclusion in the new list:

  • Marketing
  • Analysts
  • Researchers
  • Business development
  • Advertising
  • Management consultants
  • Finance
  • Costs and chartered accountants
  • Chartered financial analysts
  • Business and office coordinators
  • Senior office Administrators and managers
  • team trainers
  • Dentists
  • Pharmacists
  • Social Workers
  • Cooks and chefs

With the above in place, the Citizenship and Immigration Canada has announced that only 20,000 applications would be received each year. Within these 20,000 applications quota, not more than 1000 applications would be considered under each of the occupations mentioned on the new list. The applications would be accepted on a first come first serve basis. After the higher limit has been reached in a specific occupation, the additional applications will be returned. So all those qualified should file and get into the queue without delays.

The first year for acceptance of applications will begin on June 26, 2010 and end on June 30, 2011. Subsequent years will be calculated from July 1st to June 30th.

Alternatives for applicants not finding place in the new list of occupations for Canada

IT professionals need not get disheartened.  Almost all IT professionals with 4 years of experience or more and including those who are NOT IT managers ( simple programmers, analysts, QA etc) can qualify and apply under Quebec program. All they need to do is learn basic French. One learns French while the application is in process. Married couples have an advantage under the Quebec program as spousal age and qualifications as also number of children and their age are significant assessment factors. Mail your resume and if applicable that of spouse with information related to children and their age to ajay@abhinav.com

It may be added that many of them, especially if working in consulting capacity might also be qualified under the newly included Professional Occupations in Business Services to Management.

They could also look at making an application under the skilled migrant program to Australia.

Another alternative for IT professionals is Denmark Green card. But considering that Denmark green card is a non-immigrant visa and one is required to learn Danish for successful settlement, one is better off in opting for Quebec skilled worker program that offers permanent residency from day one of landing with all accompanying benefits. The residency status that an applicant, may get in Denmark after seven year is available from day one of landing in Canada on permanent resident visa. However, it goes without saying that ABHINAV has the expertise to service your application for Denmark Green card as well.

Another significant exclusion from the old list is that of accountants and financial managers. They should not lose hope and depending on profile and duties, most can still qualify as professional service providers to management. This is a new occupation that finds its place in the new list. If you are a financial manager or chartered accountant, please email your and the spousal resume (if applicable) to ajay@abhinav.com .

All in all, it could be said that there are both pros and cons attached to this amendment in the Skilled Worker Program. And so, this keeps the options open for those not qualifying under the new Federal Skilled Migrant program. Contact us to know more on the same.

According to reports, US authorities have suspected the involvement of three Pakistanis who are speculated to have provided finances to Times Square bombing suspect. The speculated accused are arrested by the authorities as the three are assumed to have provide funds to Faisal Shahzad, who is speculated to be one of the prime accused.

Investigators have made out a statement that it not yet been made cloudless whether the three suspects had any idea of how the funds are going to be used by the main accused. Eric Holder, who is the Attorney General, stated that they have proofs that the three Pakistani people were providing funds, but it is yet to determine whether they had any idea of the motto involved.

An anonymous official said that they might be completely innocent, but there seems to be some linkage.

Following excessive raids in Boston area, New York, New Jersey and Maine, the officials went on to arrest these three suspects on the basis of violating the Immigration rules. The federal officials have confirmed that till now no such criminal/terrorism charge has been incurred on them. Their names and identity has not been released as yet.

According to Gail Marcinkiewicz from FBI, the future holds no major threat to the residents of the US. In addition, no plot or conspiracy has been created against the country.

In addition, there are investigations going on whether there has been any finance from overseas sources or not.

According to some of the leading recruiters in the IT Sector of Australia, some form of flexibility should be maintained for the professionals to come to Australia. With this, the current skill shortages in this industry segment could easily catered to.

These skill shortages might turn out to be the cause of delay for many projects in the pipeline. Some such projects include the National Broadband Network etc. More so, the number of foreign trained IT professionals being permitted to work in Australia should be evaluated again.

Peoplebank which is the biggest recruiter for IT and technology in Australia has signed a contract with the government. According to this agreement, around 150 to 200 professionals from abroad would be permitted a visa on a yearly basis. However, in the last six months, this number has been increased by almost twenty to thirty percent. To this, Peoplebank feels there should be a further raise on this. This is because the firm forecasts skill shortages in the middle of this year, especially in the regions of New South Wales, Victoria and Canberra.

In the previous year, there was an increase in demand by around thirty percent in Sydney which were mostly catered towards projects in the banking, finance and the utility sectors. The main reason behind this is the constantly increasing opportunities and so, the need for the skilled professionals rises with it.

The visa program that is usually applied for by the employers to sponsor foreign trained professionals is the Skilled Temporary Business (Long Stay) that is the Subclass 457. More so, the recruiters have been asked by the Australian Department of Immigration to reconsider its numbers for the 457 visas to be sponsored and keep it to the available numbers.

The data for Australian Immigration projects one thousand and five hundred professionals in the computing sector who were given the 457 visa. This is a reduction from two thousand eight hundred and ten in the previous year. Also, the computing professionals were rated as the second of the top fifteen professions for the visas to be granted.

“Well done Abba” proves, once again the relevance of good cinema and vintage filmmakers like Shyam Benegal. The movie is like a breath of fresh air amongst all the commercial films with the sole purpose of entertainment. It makes us wonder whether India would ever become a developed nation. The movie addresses the nexus between the politicians, bureaucracy and law enforcement agencies which is the key to country’s ills.

well_done_abba

“Well done Abba” tells us the story of a small town, simple and a god fearing Muslim man, who is a driver in Mumbai. It traces his visit to his home town for a sanctioned one month leave that eventually gets extended to three months. The needs of “Aam Admi” are as simple as his thrust for easily available water for drinking and small farm produce. The politicians are obviously aware of his difficulties and have framed enough “Welfare Schemes” to service his needs.

However, our chosen representatives are not satisfied what our taxes pay them for the maintenance of their constant inflow of wealth filling in their tummies. So, they want a cut from these welfare schemes as well. This is to such an extent that the returns for the common man are mere peanuts or next to nil. The same happens in the case of “Abba”.

Abba applies for loans to finance a well at his home. From making an application to get an ID for “below the poverty line” (BPL) family to getting plans sanctioned, getting approval for existence of non-existent well to the payment of loan installments, he has to pay percentage and cuts. Finally, he is left with nothing and a well that was never dug in the first place.

This might seem depressing to many of the readers. On the contrary it is not. It shows that common people have avenues like the “Right to Information Act”. It also shows the urge and the capability of people to strike back. And above all, truth prevails.

But “Well Done Abba” also shows that despite projecting efforts being done, politicians, law enforcement agencies and bureaucrats find ways to protect their own interests. Why is it that things will never change on this count? Such movies are also watched by the corrupt politicians, policemen and bureaucrats. Does it not disturb their conscience after seeing such issues? How can they sleep night after night with corruption and blood of the common man on their hands? This movie questions this and much more.

Boman Irani as “Abba” has given one of his best performances ever. Without any main stream actor, he carries the film on his shoulders. He shows the struggle of a middle class Muslim man who wants his daughter to study and do well in life. Yet at the same time, he had to keep up with the demands of his community. With a cast having Manisha Lamba as the only other recognised face, he is simply superb and proves why good and simple people are the backbone of our society. For without such people, we would become a society of jungle raj and crime.

All in all, hats off to Shyam Benegal for his brilliance to tell stories with such simplicity.

Lloyd Banks, the famous American rapper was recently detained in Canada for allegedly robbing a Canadian concert promoter. He was there to perform at the NV club in Brantford, Ontario. According to reports by MTV News, Banks was freed on January 13th and was given the permission to leave for the United States. The dispute was regarding some finance issue after which Banks and his associate were arrested on January 9th, around 5:30 a.m.

The police cleared that Banks along with other three men had a dispute with the show promoter after which they ended up beating him in the hotel room.

Banks earlier posted a bond of $50,000 bond while other three associates paid a bond of $25,000 each, after which two men were given acceptance to return to the US while Banks and Sloane were kept in custody.

His lawyer, Patrick J. Ducharme, cleared that Banks was granted the right to go back to the US on January 13th, after his hearing. Also, Sloane is still in the custody of the Immigration officers

The recent clearly points out in the direction that Immigration rules remain same for everyone. No matter whether you are a celebrity or a common man, every immigrant has to pass through the stringent measures created by the government of every country. Also the application process is decked with some serious regulations, for which assistance from an Immigration expert becomes a must!
