Food and Delhi can be used synonymously. If you are a Delhiite, you know what it is all about! As one of the costliest cities in India, the surge continues with the upcoming Common Wealth Games. But what has caught my sight is the curiosity of the Delhiites when it comes to food. Being a foodie myself, I know how hard it is to resist! So, the secret behind those extra large bellies is finally out.

According to the Household Consumer Expenditure report brought out by the Delhi Government, around thirty seven percent of an urban Delhiite’s monthly income is spent on food commodities. Milk products top the list with ten percent of the income being spent. This was followed by cereals and pulses costing another eight percent, two percent each for edible oils and fruits and vegetables catered to four percent and so on.
As per the report, urban Delhi’s per capita expense on a monthly basis has risen to Rs. 2078 (in 2008) from Rs. 1972 (in 2007). This makes the city being rated at the top amongst all states and union territories. With this, the monthly per capital expense at a national level for the urban India comes out to be Rs. 1472.
The report also mentioned that the fuel expenses catered to another nine percent while clothing led to an additional of six percent, three percent on medical and health care, house rent saw six percent, eight percent on education and one percent on products related to tobacco and others. These expenses were on a monthly per capita basis.
Apart from the thirty seven percent being spent on the food commodities, another sixty three percent was found to be paid for non – food groceries.
However, the more important question to ask is how many of them actually follow a health conscious diet? Be it the road side food which definitely has its share of germs or the elite restaurants which has its dose on the calories. The consumption of fatty rich diet with the lack of exercise could later turn out to be a major concern. With obesity kicking in, its high time, a nutritionist is paid a visit to.
Eating well is a must…but eating right is crucial for the healthy living of an individual. Even in urban cities like Delhi, the lack of awareness for the right information could easily be noticed. Most of these eating habits have sprung from their ancient traditional lifestyles which have been passed on to the current generation.
More so, the style statement is a major factor. It is a common notion amongst women that eating less would help them get slimmer. On the contrary, it would lead to the loss of their health. Similarly, for men drinking and smoking is a matter of a prestige issue. Most of them don’t realize that it is hazardous to their health. They succumb to addiction which leads to a fatal outcome.
However, this does not mean that one has to eat the plain bland diet which is prepared at home that would cater to all your health issues. We have taste buds for a reason! But lets use them judiciously…what say?
