Finally, it has been announced by Facebook regarding its location strategy. “Places” is a new functionality catering to check-in/location which has been put into all the existing applications. This would be started with the iPhone.
This functionality is considered as being somewhat alike to other similar LBS applications such as the Gowalla and the Foursquare. In these offering, the users have to check-in to different locations to inform and be informed by friends who are in the nearby locations.
However, these applications are unique when it comes to a few specific aspects. These include the following:
The friends could be tagged by the user; the ones who are also checking in with the user. This is a key feature as per the massive social graph by Facebook which portrays the feature moving ahead.
Another key feature is that people could also be tagged with various photographs.
Status updates is another important characteristic. This is with the help of “@” sign which is quite common and aids in forming a story of those uses involved on their walls.
Representation pertaining to the “Place Pages” or the “Venue Pages”. Each and every page exhibits a section which portrays the recent activity. This is also known as “New Feed” for the place in question.
On the web, many different sections are available with contain data regarding the previous check-in history and similar data specific to each venue.
With the above, there is a bunch of profile images which depict the friends who have visited and so on.
It is being said that the function of Tagging would soon have a key part to play in all the strategies implemented by Facebook. Tagging is only permitted for friends and the check-ins would be visible to only friends of the user. The latter is by default which could be changed as per personal preferences.
The ability to tag could also be removed which would not permit the friends to tag the user.
