Sometimes I feel that Indians act like hypocrites! We boost too much about our Indian art forms and Indians as being very traditionally and culturally rich people. But how much do we genuinely respect and understand art? If an Indian painter or filmmaker tries to capture the beauty of nudity, then we suddenly gets hyper. Why?
India is a free country where everyone has a basic right to freedom of expression, then why the hell Indian government and common public stop somebody to express oneself. An artist has full right to express himself through his art and nudity is one beautiful part of expression. Why we Indian can’t perceive and understand art with broader and open mind?
The other day I was having an argument with my sister who kept on insisting this one point that it’s very shameful to project a woman in naked; this is unacceptable in Indian society? That was her statement! The idea is not about showing a female body naked but more about capturing the beauty of the most beautiful creativity ‘woman body’ of God. Nudity in any art form whether it is in paintings, movie or photography is not about sexuality and exposure but about capturing the beauty of a woman’s body with its curves.
If we turn over the pages of Indian history then we will find innumerable examples of Indian artists who painted and sculpted nudity on the walls of caves and temples. Ajanta and Ellora caves, Khujaraho temples in Madhya Pradesh are one of the finest examples of Indian art which shows nude man and woman in various sex postures.. I really do not think that these beautiful sculpts can hurt someone’s sentiments or they are promoting ‘sex ‘. Giving such remarks for these exquisite art forms is truly pathetic and reflects the narrow mindedness of man which has failed to appreciate the unique beauty of ‘nudity’.
In fact, Kama Sutra is the preamble of ‘sex’, a great piece of literature which enlightens you about man and woman relationship. Kama sutra has its origin in India only and even then we people shy away from talking about nudity in public. Why? We may be appreciating the excellence of those sculptors who made such beautiful sculpts but afraid of accepting it publicly.
In foreign countries there are many filmmakers and painters who have created amazing expressions of art capturing a human body with its beautiful curves without any curtain of cloth. And their art has been appreciated and taken in a very positive way. I really do not mean that we must imitate the foreigners but there is definitely some scope of learning for us from their attitude.
It’s only a matter of perception and our mind set. Art can not hurt anybody’s sentiments or insult anyone. I believe that we can grow more mature and broad minded so that we can look at the art with different eyes.
What is a puppet? A puppet is a mindless doll which is controlled by a puppeteer. And aren’t we all the puppets of the society with the latter having control over us? I know I am writing on quite a controversial topic and some may even want to thrash my face for being so daring to call people as mere puppets. How can God’s greatest creation “Man” (who is superior amongst all the species) be compared to a bare puppet?
But as I entered my adolescence and started developing my own thinking, all the adults (including my parents, siblings, uncles and aunts) around me started looking like puppets. Every morning, I used to find my sisters spending most of their time dressing up nicely because they wanted to attract some boy in their class. My father always used to get upset as his daughter (of course, it’s me) was always the low scorer in comparison to his neighbor’s daughter. My mother always complained that why are we not living in a posh colony like my other aunts. Day and night, she used to dream of a bigger house in an expensive area like south Delhi so that she can impress her friends and sisters. My younger brother never left any stone unturned to impress his teachers by learning all the answers by heart, even if he does not understand a word out of it.
I guess mine is not the only family where you will find people with such dreams and ambitions but its there in almost every family. So many of our dreams are actually not born out of our desires but more out of our ego or some external influence. Our happiness loses its charm if we find someone else in a better situation and we start comparing ourselves and our lives with that person. I believe, I am not writing anything which is not a reality; this kind of attitude can be felt in our lives at all times. And we are a witness to that! Aren’t we?
In fact, too much influence of the western culture in the Indian society is one of the best examples of a Man becoming a mannequin of external influence and ending up losing its identity. Indian culture and values are slowly declining making a way for the western culture to creep in. Learning from other’s culture is a reflection of an open minded society where people are ready to learn. But losing our own values and adopting other’s culture is an attitude which shows the lack of confidence in one’s own identity. And that’s why, despite being so culturally rich and with beautiful landscape which is so diverse, we are still a developing nation. Our beautiful art forms whether its performing arts like dance or literature or the architecture does not receive that recognition and praise which we deserve.
India is a beautiful nation with a rich diversity when it comes to religion, landscape and culture and we must realize its importance and respect it. And so is the same with our lives as well. Instead of doing the things which people expect us to do or to merely show off, if we do those things which we truly desire, we would be able to identify ourselves in a much better way. And then, we would be definitely on the path to genuine happiness.
