Though Shashi Tharoor was dogged by multiple controversies ever since he has confirmed his portfolio in the Union Cabinet Ministry as the Minister of State for External Affairs, but the IPL controversy in the recent past has dragged him under the public scrutiny. And this one had the intensity to take away his ministership. In short, his alleged love interest Sunanda Pushkar pushed him into a situation where it seemed that Tharoor risk the government in a very embarrassing way.
A couple of days ago, I happened to read in a daily that somewhere in the next month, Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar are getting engaged in a posh restaurant in Mumbai. Twice married earlier, Tharoor, who has two well-to-do sons, is intending to marry for the third time. He must be thinking – his ministership can be taken away, but not his love!
Personally, I admire the Twitter boy of Indian politics. To me, he is an all-rounder. In a short span of time, he proved his mettle in many fields. A man with many real-life roles- a human rights advocate, journalist, diplomat, and an author, Tharoor has also served the United Nations Organization. Everything went well for Tharoor, but for his foray into the Indian politics and Indian Premier League.
He is an eminent figure, and his popularity can be gauged by the fact that he has been the first Indian celebrity to get 100,000 followers on the social micro-blogging site – Twitter. Yes, there is no doubt that he is a highly capable man and could have reached great heights in Indian politics. But, it’s not the end of the story! We still have many infamous leaders on the political front. And in comparison to them, Tharoor has done nothing!
On the other hand, big people do make mistakes, but Tharoor has probably made many. And in his case, stakes are really high since he is a prominent figure, which is the only reason why he had to leave his office, though on request of his party. Shashi Tharoor may have lost his job as a Union Minister, but his involvement in the Kochi-IPL team made his lady-love, the talk of the town overnight.
It seems some people are destined to be surrounded by controversies. Tharoor is one of them. A set of controversies, ranging from tweeting government policy matters to staying in luxury hotel rooms; from advocating that Gandhi Jayanti should not be a holiday to the latest IPL matter involving his would-be-wife.
Not much can be said about his personal life. It’s his choice of life. But, to be a leader, one has to have a clean image that could appeal to the general public to follow him. Shashi Tharoor could have been a real political leader, if he had control his outspoken nature!
