Do you fag? Have you been trying to quit smoking? But your efforts have gone in vain? If yes, here are a few answers as to why it just might not be your fault. A new study has shown it all depends on your genes. So, the clemency of the genes counts big time!

smoking

We all know the ill effects of smoking…so the smokers who have realized what they are up to would but obviously quit. But we all know that getting rid of a habit which has been persistent for a very long time is not easy. It needs a lot of effort and discipline to actually let go. It is especially true for an activity that you gain pleasure in doing so and more so, the one that relaxes you!

Here’s some gyaan before you actually take the plunge: three genetic mutations have been found which are known to control the smoking habits of an individual. These are:

  • Genes to aggravate the amount of smoking: These genetic mutations determine the number of cigarettes you smoke a day.
  • Genes connected to Smoking triggers: This permits an individual to smoke or even getting addicted.
  • Genes Permitting an Individual to Quit: These mutations trigger the individual to quit smoking.

These findings could be considered as a breakthrough when it comes to rehabilitation of these smokers. Keeping such aspects in mind, it would be much easier to determine the treatment which would be effective in throwing that pack of cigarettes in the bin. And in the process, less polluting the environment!

Studies have been published where comparison of 140,000 different human DNA was done by Nature Genetics. The study showed that the urge and desire to give up smoking rested more on the genes rather than the self control of the individual.

Additionally, two studies of the three found the regions where a person lived also had an effect to the number of cigarettes being consumed a day. Here, the genes connected to the dependence of nicotine and there are two separate genes controlling the metabolism of nicotine in the body.

Mutations pertaining to these genes are linked with a small increase in the amount of smoking. With this, comes an increase of another 10 percent to the risk of developing lung cancer. This is when compared to those who are not the carriers.

Above all, any form of smoking in whatever amounts and quantities is injurious to health. So genes or no genes, rehab and determination are definitely one of the main keys to curb it! So, don’t ignore it!
