Up in the Air is the one of the Oscar buzzes this year…so we thought why not make it a buzz at Abhinav! As an Oscar nominated movie with lead nominations, it is but obvious that there are a lot of expectations from the audience as well.
So let’s analyse! George Clooney is a Senior Executive whose job is to fire people, but with a sense of compassion. So, his job includes traveling all the time gaining mileage points with the Airlines. With a non – committed approach towards life, some might feel that the protagonist has lost touch with one of the most important essence of life which is known as “family”.
The movie goes through the normal roller coaster of demonstrating doomed personal relationships, family reunions and a predictable ending where the protagonist is stranded with a feeling of getting what he deserves. However, the viewer is left wondering whether his perspective is responsible for the unhappy situation that he finds himself in?
There are predictable scenes when it comes to the importance of family and the need for companionship. However, it is still not clear as to why families, friends and society at large pity those who do not wish to be emotionally committed? Is it that a man (or women) must get married, have children and grow old with a companion to earn his share of stripes from the society? And those who do not fall into this bracket are doomed to be unhappy souls destined for a lonely death?
There is no doubt that it is human nature to seek companionship and experience the pleasure of having a family. However, it is an individual’s choice to be committed or not? And if he/she prefers to be committed, there is no question of failing the responsibility, faith and trust that comes with it.
Based on the choices that an individual makes, the society at large might develop various opinions about the individual. Some might term him as being selfish and irresponsible. Others might call him as being scared of commitment because it might pose certain restrictions for the individual.
On the other hand, there are some who would simply say that it is the business of the concerned individual. So, no other individual except for the one that the concerned individual has designated has the right to comment. After all, we come alone in this world and so, we leave the world as loners.
But let’s not forget that any movie always portrays something that the viewer could take back home. Also, the unusual always sells…and so the movie being the story about a loner surely sells to such an extent that it has created quite a buzz! And more so, the fact that this article has came up clearly shows the talking tongues. Thus, mission accomplished!

I am yet to watch the movie…so all I will say is that movies are an escape to the surreal world. It is agreed that most of the times, the plots are inspired from real – life scenarios, but in the end, it should be regarded as mere fiction which makes us think and nothing beyond that!
Though several movies have been made on this very concept, I am just dying to watch ‘Up In the Air’, for it has George Clooney…
dying to watch the exceptional performance by the master George Clooney
lol.. i havent seen the movie.. bt this blog sure gave me more than enough reason to watch the movie for so sure…
I jz lovereal topics.. n really think dat movie’s shud b made on such critical things in life.. as movies are the best way to expose such very big situations wdout hurting ny1 n even to give an impact at every1s heart n thus minds start ticking…. on the topic.. n mission accomplished..
n yeah…George Clooney is OMG…. so for him…nythn….lol…
I havent seen the movie. therefore, wont be able to comment much. what i feel, everyone is different, you will see one guy who is not committed to family whereas you will see another guy totally committed to family. everybody has different committment levels and the level changes depending on its availability.
Well. In School I was a student of Hindi Literature and remember one learning from it. Translated into English it will quote as – “Literature is mirror of the society we live in”. In today’s world we can extend it to include all kind of communication channels – movies included. Only the surreal world as we call it is presented in an entertaining form. On other issues, George Clooney is beginng to look old. Though still very handsome enough to be an envy for most of the men! He has made me wish to fitter and I am going to join a GYM very soon! Movie bu itself has a nice built up but expected ending. The best takeaway from the movie is this 4′10′ of a girl who has given an excellent performance. Okay for one time watch but no need to carry towels along. It deals with larger issues beyong romantic angles come with the movie. Having Clooney in movie the director had to have the romantic angle. In the end, you feel for him.
Nice Post!!
I am a movie buff and I began reading this post as If it were analyzing the movie which is btw what the author claimed to do.The focus of the post suddenly shifted to the realm of a social commentary and finally to the topic of how a movie is sold.So for me the post was more a mishmash of different thoughts.
