PIO’s: PASSPORT SURRENDER A MUST NOW IF YOU HAVE ACQUIRED CITIZENSHIP OF ANOTHER COUNTRY!

The Indian high commission Toronto has confirmed that all Persons of Indian origins who acquire Canadian Citizenship must formally renounce and cancel their Indian passport.

This rule brought to force on June 1st 2010, condemns the prolonged holding, re-issuing, applying, traveling on an Indian passport & considers dual citizenship a punishable offense under The Indian passport act of 1967.this rule amendment has set a lot of legal hitches and rigorous penalties for the same.

After acquiring foreign citizenship, just holding or re-application, renewal for an Indian passport can cost you a fine of CAD$600, while traveling on one can cause up to CAD$240-$1200 to be drawn from you!

You are supposed to walk in with your passport with the renunciation fee of CAD$168. This will fetch you the “surrender certificate” which will henceforth be your gateway to all future applications for Indian visas, PIO(people of Indian origin) card or even, OCI (overseas citizenship of India) card applications.

If you have been issued Canadian citizenship before June 1st 2010, you shall be spared your CAD$168 though.
