The General Skilled Migrant category for Australian immigration is one of the key doorways for foreign skilled migrants to enter Australia. Applicants are selected under this program based on the ANZSCO list which has been brought out by the Australian government. This list caters to those occupations which are in demand and required skilled labor for those specific occupations.

This list consists of two sub lists namely Schedule 3 and schedule 4. The applicants whose occupations are mentioned in Schedule 3 can apply under the general skilled migrant category where as those occupations present in Schedule 4 have to apply under the Sponsored (State Nomination/Blood Relation) or under Regional Programs. A total of 120 points have to be scored for both the categories. The occupation of a telecommunications engineer is mentioned in both the above lists. So, the applicant has the option of applying under any of the two categories.

Tasks and Responsibilities

• A telecommunications engineer has to design, plan, build, configure as well as commission telecom devices, systems and networks which includes radio, digital data systems etc.
• Bringing together the project proposals to fix on the goals, needs, background, scope of the project and other relevant equipment.
• Evaluating the system hardware and the software for its performance so as to anticipate the needs for the future and develop equipment accordingly.
• Deciding on the arrangement and the type of transformers, transmission lines, circuits and other equipment.
• Making the specifications as well as interpreting them along with the drawings for the use of the equipment.

Apart from the above, there are other responsibilities as well which a telecommunications engineer would be expected to perform.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree or higher education or a minimum of five years of relevant work experience is a must.
• In rare cases, both qualification as well as relevant experience is required to qualify for the same.
• A vendor certification would also help.
