The Statics Canada through its Family-focused Immigration Policy has released a report on last Thursday where it is mentioned that Canadian Immigrants can practice their native language. According to the statistics report, almost 55% born children in the country from immigrant parents practice the mother tongue of their parents. In 1981, it was 41% only. In recent years, the figure has increased and it is due to the result of strong structures of family in the country.
The report exactly mentioned, “The most important factor is the extent to which children are exposed to those languages within the family”. The Immigration Policy of Canada between the years of 1980 to 2000 had allowed a complete unit of a family with parents & grandparents to Canada. The main focus of the policy was reunification of the family.
About 70% Canadian Immigrant children practice the mother tongue of their parents that include languages such as: Punjabi, Chinese, Persian, Turkish, Bengali, Armenian and Urdu. However, there are less than 20% children from Italian, Dutch, Creole and Tagalog language background.
