Better Employment Opportunities for Overseas Students in Australia

According to a recent report by the Graduate Careers Australia (GCA), overseas students completing their graduation in Australia will get more employment opportunities in the country in their respective areas of study. The said report has also revealed that the demand for overseas graduates in the country increased last year, with a number of employers appointing the overseas graduates at 31%, which is a substantial rise after the 2008 global crisis.

These types of fluctuations are well interrelated with the modifications made to the General Skilled Workers Program of Australia, which motivates overseas students to come to this beautiful Land of Kangaroo to live and find employment in the nation.

Dr Noel Edge, the Executive Director of GCA was quoted as saying that the increasing demand for graduate students will encourage the overseas students to come Australia for study. He also expressed that there will be more job opportunities available for the international students in Australia. The Government of the nation is hoping to witness the growth in the near future.

Highlighting the six main employment sectors of the country, the Graduate Careers Australia has mentioned that the highest number of international students got employment, were from sectors like the technology, communication and utilities. However, in compared to last two years, in 2011, some other sectors, namely: finance and accounting, construction, manufacturing, mining and engineering sectors attracted more number of overseas graduates.

Besides, the said report has also mentioned that the shortages of IT professionals in the country might have affected the rate of employment for international graduates. It also mentioned that the government organizations can’t appoint the overseas graduates due to the basic condition that the government employers can only employ the citizens or permanent residents of the country.

The employers of legal professional services, communication technology and utilities also have certain concerns about the retention of graduates overseas, whilst others think that they may go for the experience, knowledge and skills they obtain from a graduate scheme to other employers.
