Pursuant to a latest report by the Government, there is an urgent need for overseas skilled professionals in British Columbia with an effective system of immigration, as a large wave of retirement is expected in this region in the upcoming years.
As a result of the eight regional conferences conducted by the British Columbia Immigration Task Force in the province along with the one in Nanaimo and online feedback, it is found that there is an immediate need for Canadian workers to fill up the skills shortages of this region.
The Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society’s Executive Director, Hilde Schlosar was happy with the Task Force results. In this connection, Ms. Schlosar was quoted as saying that with the wave of retirement which is coming quite fast due to baby boomers . . . there is zero percent population growth; in fact growth in the region is minus. She also mentioned that the province has lack of adequate number of children and thus, workforce to maintain their economy.
The Immigration Task Force of British Columbia expressed that the employers of Canada made complains that there are skilled shortages in the province and the business owners are getting worried about the closure or relocation of their businesses if the province could not attract more number of Canada skilled immigrants.
The mentioned report has provided some recommendations, they are:
- To increase the level of British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program;
- To get the commitment from the government to reform the immigration system to compliment the economic needs of the province
Some key figures on immigration in the report include:
- 12.2% rate of unemployment for Canada newcomers;
- 6% rate of unemployment for Canada-born professionals;
- 36% of immigrants got employment at lower level relative to the nation of origin;
- British Columbia got 2nd rank among the provinces where new immigrants are provided with highest wages;
- -30.5% percentage which new immigrants make in comparison to Canada-born workers in British Columbia.
