After wining recently held the US presidential election, Barack Obama gave a positive sign of immigration reform and said that the reform will bring a plethora of opportunities for the nation. Speaking at the press conference (first time after wining the election), he said that the bill of immigration reform will be introduced very soon, once we complete the inauguration that will be held on January 21, 2013.
Obama also said that he is quite sure that he would be succeeded in his mission. He however made the same promise of immigration reform during the presidential election campaign in the year of 2008. But, he could not fulfill his promise and said it was because of global economy slowdown that majorly affected the United States and he spent his precious time in tackling that!
Critics however clearly said that Obama failed completely to use the mandate to change the immigration system. The president could even do the reformation by taking a lead on such issue. But, the president led Democratic Party lost its control over Congress in the mid-term election in 2010 that made situation tougher to pass the bill.
The US Republican Party, on the other hand, gained control over one chamber of Congress. However, the ruling-Democratic party continued to have control over the Senate. It made difficult to pass any legislation by the both houses as it requires bipartisan mandates. Congress was gridlocked and created a great hurdle for ruling party to pass any act.
Congress is still gridlocked as in the recent presidential election Republican Party regained its control over the Congress (House of Representative) and Democrats kept continue its control over the Senate.
John Boehner from Republican Party has a positive indication of cooperation and said that reformation of the US immigration system is quite compulsory as it is not quite effective. Lyndsay Graham, Republican Senator, said that he will fully cooperate to reform the system as well as passing the Schumer Graham Act.
Washington Commentators meanwhile revealed a positive scenario of immigration reform. According to the Demographic experts. Hispanics are growing rapidly in the country and it is expected that their would be 40m eligible voters by the year of 2030. Many of Republicans clearly understand that the party need to take some major strategies to gain the minority (Hispanics) votes and this will not be possible without supporting the immigration reform.
Here are some important factors of comprehensive immigration;
- Take a major step to restrict illegal migrants at the US/Mexico border
- Restricting illegal migrants working in the United States
- Provision to offer citizenship for undocumented migrants
