Australian Visa Granted to a Rapist!

An American convict who was charged of raping a minor has been granted an Aussie Visa, an incident that has raised questions on the immigration measures of Australia. The occurrence has also brewed the need of stringent measures to ensure that an episode of this kind does not happen in future.

The 63-year-convict managed to get a temporary spousal visa, despite facing charges of rape in Washington. The news points out that the convict’s criminal record was not scrutinized before granting him the Australian Visa.

Sandi Logan, from Immigration Department stated that measures have been taken to abolish the culprit’s Australian visa. He went on to say that visitors coming to the Kangaroo land would need to affirm the criminal convictions, and if they fail to do so and the department acknowledges it, they would be due for strict action! Mr. Logan also affirmed that the concerned person entered the country on a Tourist Visa, but was given a Temporary Spousal Visa.

The convict has been notified that his visa would be cancelled sooner or later, most probably by the end of this month.

According to Herald Sun newspaper, the accused is a registered sex offender and has also been charged with burglary. An anonymous police source confirmed that the convict went through the application process; he lied and managed to get his visa.

The issue has raised apprehensions for the Northern Territory Opposition as to how a sex-convict from U.S. managed to live in Northern Territory after getting a visa!
