The first group of illegal migrants seeking refuge in Australia has landed at Inverbrackie which is the newest mainland immigration detention centre in Australia. The group consists of 81 people who have been brought to this new centre. This centre is located South Australia near Woodside. These asylum seekers would be detained here till they get an approval regarding their visas for Australia.
This transfer of asylum seekers simply means more for woes for the Immigration department in Australia. The numbers of people coming to the Australian shores via boats have been increasing. This is surely giving a tough time for the immigration authorities. The detention centers situated offshore have also reached a saturation point where in the government of the nation is actually being criticized for its policies pertaining to immigration.
The current group involves twenty two families including 34 children. These people come from various nations including Iraq, Iran and Sri Lanka. Some of these families have been given a temporary accommodation in a motel in Darwin for the last few months.
According to Chris Bowen, the Immigration Minister for Australia, all these 400 asylum seekers would eventually have to shift to a new location. Of these, only the low-risk detainees would be shifted. When it comes to the families, they are not permitted to leave the detention centre unless they have someone to escort. While these families are detained, their applications for the Australian visa would be under process.
