Australian Government Pays out Compensation to Haneef!

We all remember Mohamed Haneef who was wrongly accused of involvement in terrorist activities. Initially, the man was asked to leave Australia after all the charges were dropped against him.

The latest in this regard is that the Federal Government of Australia has paid a huge amount of money as compensation for canceling his visa in Australia and for detaining him wrongfully, post his charges pertaining to terrorist acts. This settlement came out after his case in 2007 which fumbled further. Haneef is an Indian national and was practicing medicine in Australia.

A compensation of about $1 million has been given out for the treatment meted out towards him by the federal police and the immigration authorities in Australia. However, the exact amount given out has been kept confidential.

According to Rod Hodgson, Haneef’s attorney has commented that this compensation was significant and that Haneef is more than happy with the deal.

After Haneef was granted a bail, his work permit in Australia was cancelled. This further went on regarding his relationship with a cousin who was apparently involved in terrorist activities in UK. After it was found out about his cousin, Haneef was cleared of all the charges.

It has been agreed by the Australian government to issue an apology publicly for the false charges imposed on the Indian-born which further led to his deportation from Australia.
