New Zealand citizens or residence class visa holders sponsoring foreign nationals for New Zealand residence class visa are entitled to some responsibilities pertaining to the sponsored person. Let us have a look at the sponsorship undertakings concerning the sponsor in New Zealand:
- A sponsor is responsible for ensuring that the sponsored person is accommodated well and suitably in New Zealand till the time he/she secures personal accommodation.
- The sponsor is responsible for maintenance, such as costs of minimum requirements needed for the sponsored individual’s health, welfare, food, as well as clothing till the time the latter does not have the means.
- The sponsor is liable for repatriation of the sponsored person. This includes the costs which have to do with the sponsored person’s leaving the Kiwi land upon the end of the sponsorship period in the following cases; (a) if the sponsored individual does not have the means for his/her own repatriation; and (b) if the individual is subject to deportation.
- The sponsor is also responsible for the costs of deportation of the sponsored individual, if the latter is subject to deportation during the sponsorship period. The costs basically involve cost of locating, detaining and travel cost of the person while deporting.
A resident class visa holder (sponsored individual) is generally liable to support their accommodation, maintenance and overseas travel costs, but if the person does not do that, it is the sponsor of the visa holder who is subject to pay for all the costs concerning the sponsored person.
