A parent or parents of a New Zealand citizen or residence class visa holder is eligible to be granted a resident visa if the former meet the following:
- If the parents(s) have no dependent child/children and all of their adult children are permanently and legally outside the country; OR
- The center of gravity of their family is in the kiwi country.
In either of the case, the parents must be sponsored by an adult child who is an acceptable sponsor for the category. In addition, the parents as principal applicants must meet the health and character requirements as set out by the INZ.
In order to be eligible to sponsor parents, the New Zealand citizen or resident must meet the minimum income limit as well, unless he/she has obtained the NZ residence class visa on the basis of his/her asylum status. In addition, if the sponsor is aged 65 years or over at the date the sponsorship application is filed, he/she need not meet the income limit. Income requirements are:
- The gross minimum personal income requirement is 29,897.92 NZ Dollars per year, which must be obtained from:
- 1. Sustained paid employment; AND/OR
- 2. Regular self-employment; AND/OR
- 3. Regular investment income.
