Australia has eased out the privacy regulations to release the private information related with the overseas students studying in Australia. This would be done to assist the police authorities know the root cause behind the attacks on foreign students, especially those coming from Indian subcontinent.
The motto is to find out whether these attacks are racially stimulated or some other reason is attached with them. According to Karen Curtis, Australian Privacy Commissioner, the data released would recognize the present and past students coming to Australia.
Reports say that the decision has come into action especially after the Australian Institute of Criminology motivated to go for a research based program to identify whether overseas applicants are more prone to the attacks as compared to the ones of Australian origin who are of the same age.
The Commissioner confirmed that the release of information would include the name and age of the current and former students and would serve as a decision in the country’s interest.
The research would further provide a fair picture of what all crime related activities are going on against the overseas applicants, which in turn would assist in crafting an apt policy in future. The identification would consider information about students from India, China, South Korea, and the US, to name a few.
In addition, privacy protection has been the core facet of this project. Once the project would come to an end, personal information related with the students would be destroyed, to ensure that their privacy in kept intact.
Earlier, Foreign minister Stephen Smith had informed about the research based project during his Indian visit in the month of March.
