A report by the Human Rights Commission of Australia – suggested the federal government – to scrutinize Country’s refugee program immediately for introducing some new amendments.
The report prepared by the commission – after collecting data regarding other country’s progressive step in this arena – urged the government for offering some sort of flexibility in refugee program and create more opportunities for asylum seekers.
The commission has prepared the report on the basis of data collection from detention centers and compared this with other countries in terms of doing wonderful jobs in community placement much than the land of kangaroos.
Sweden reflected a wonderful effort in this – where asylum seekers are placed in community housing in less time period that may take around a week. Canada follows a community placement system on a bond, which are to be paid by the asylum seekers in case of breaching the conditions.
Michael Raper, a member of Australian Red Cross, completely supports the fact revealed by the report – saying the present system is quite expensive as well as harmful.
He said, “Our effort must be to speed up the program rather than hanging them for a long period that affects them mentally and health wise.”
The report consists of total eight recommendations – also include the security checks of all asylum seekers and to offer some sort of leniency in detention. Here are some important facts of other recommendations.
- The Australian government must be focused on a uniform model of community placements for those of asylum seekers. Considering this, a person’s community assessment must be conducted at the earliest-post arrival.
- The government must accept the obligations of international human rights by providing a decision in regard of detaining a person, or case related to continue the detention of a person, to be subject to review by the court.
- The assessment of detention in case of individuals should be assessed on a case-by-case basis
