The controversial human-smuggling bill has again been introduced by the Harper government. It enforces penalties on the smugglers and punishes those who illegally pay money to migrate to Canada.
Virtually, it is the same bill that was presented in Parliament in the very last autumn. It didn’t pass earlier due to the lack of support from oppositions. However, now it has got the passing assurance as the Tories have earned a majority in the House of Commons.
Conservative government’s cabinet ministry has said that the proposed bill is required to restore the confidence of the public regarding the immigration system, cut down on criminals earning profits on smuggling of humans, and discourage the probable migrants to some other world destinations from migrating to Canada through human smuggling.
However, the opposition describes this bill as “bad policy”. According to them, it may harm the lawful immigrants of the country and thus affect the reputation of the country internationally as a safe place. It may also violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms of the constitution.
This human-smuggling bill has come to the scene after the incident of arresting of four men occurred in the region of Toronto. These four men were arrested in association with the ship called MV Ocean Lady. More than a year ago or so, this ship carried 76 illegitimate migrants to the country’s West Coast area.
According to this bill, on the basis of the circumstances, the smugglers will get mandatory jail terms from a minimum of 3 years to a maximum of 10 years.
