This particular detention center was closed down in the year 2002, courtesy the massive riots which hampered Sydney all over. Now Australia has confirmed that there are plans to re-open the immigration center to handle the increased number of asylum seekers.
According to Immigration Minister Chris Evans, the detention center would be the home to the asylum seekers from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Evans went on to confirm that the center at the Curtin Air Base would be used for the motto of keeping these asylum seekers who are increasing in number (as a result of Australia’s decision to suspend applications from these two countries).
He said that earlier the same base was used to keep the asylum seekers, but now the facilities would be upgraded, especially to cope up with the flock of those people whose claims have been suspended for time being.
Australian government is already facing headaches, courtesy the boat people who come arrive in rickety boats. Already Australian’s detention center in Christmas Island has been flooding with plenty of asylum seekers with every passing day. Hence, there are plans going on to transfer those people to the center at the Curtin Air Base. The Minister confirmed that various group of people from the Christmas Island would be transferred to other Australian detention center, to ease out the pressure.
Evans said that it makes sense that government should take ample measures to manage this ever-growing population and provide accommodation facilities.
Curtin was closed in the year 2002 after detainees complained the existence of violence against them. Now the controversial center is reopening!
