In a positive development–from the DC based unauthorized migrants’ viewpoints—and on the lines of Massachusetts, Vermont, Illinois, & California, the District of Columbia has approved a fresh bill for offering driver’s licenses to unregistered aliens. The bill that becomes effective from May 2014 onwards will see that the migrants—both lawful and unregistered–gain driver’s licenses, besides IDs in the DC Council. But every such driver’s license will carry a mark that will reveal that they are meant for unregistered migrant residents.
A double license procedure for aliens in the district will exist—while one will be for unregistered migrants, the other will be for the lawful immigrants. The license for unregistered aliens will bear a resemblance to the usual driver’s license with the sole difference being that there will be a rider saying the same is not meant for administrative federal motives; for instance, gaining admission to any of the federal facility.
Encouraging Development for Illegal Aliens
This development will decisively make unregistered migrants in DC happier even as it will give them the helpful access to some essential services while remarkably decreasing the exile threat hanging over the heads of those staying in the province.
Immigrant Activists Not Too Happy
The positive development however has not too inspired some immigrant-activists who claim that the step to have two classes of driver’s licenses will restrict the rules’ efficiency. They claim that the DC rules for making the city ever more welcoming for aliens, by not questioning them concerning their position of immigration by the police authorities, will become comparatively less useful.
