Dependent Children in New Zealand Residence Class Visa Application

For a dependent child to be included in the New Zealand Residence Class Visa application, the child must meet the definition of a dependent child as defined in the instructions for the Residence Class Visa Application.

The most important aspect here is that the visa officer should be convinced that the couple actually has a child who is dependent on them. Such a child is defined as being dependent if the child satisfies the following the conditions:

  • The child should be in the age group of 18 to 24 years or 17 years or younger in age. He/she should not have any children of his/her own and should be single.
  • The person should be total dependent on the principal applicant and the partner for living as well as financial support.

While considering the dependent child in the age group of 18 to 24 years, the dependent factor would be based on the following during assessment by the visa officers:

  • Employment: Whether or not the child is earning full time or part time along with the total number of hours put into work.
  • Any other means of financial assistance that the child is seeking.
  • Is the child living with his parents or other members of the family?
  • To what extent, support is being provided to the child?
  • Is the child still studying (full time or part time)?

The above are some of the many aspects which are considered by the visa officer before granting a final approval for the New Zealand Residence Class visa.
