Good news for Indian engineering students as they can expect India to be one of the members of Washington Accord. India has been a provisional member of the Accord since 2009. The country is expectedly in a run to prepare itself to become a full-fledged member of the group, which comprises thirteen nations with an agreement to recognize each other’s engineering degrees.
With becoming a member of Washington Accord, Indian engineering degrees would also be recognized in those thirteen member countries. The review of the accreditation process in India has already started which is being carried out by two representatives of Washington Accord. The review would be followed by report to the National Board of Accreditation in India. The report will be vital in bringing changes to guidelines for the Indian accreditation process concerning engineering degrees. The amendments to the guidelines will be implemented keeping accord with the Accreditation Board for engineering and Technology of USA.
The accreditation process for engineering colleges in India is yet to meet the standards of those thirteen member countries of Washington Accord. To be eligible to be one of them, India needs certain changes in its accreditation process. Reportedly, the suggestions to improve the process had been made earlier as well, however, due to some issues with the AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education), it did not happen till date because National Board of Accreditation was part of the AICTE. Now that NBA has become an independent concern, we hope to have a revised accreditation process in India very soon.
