New Advisory Council replaces IDAG

A new Council for Immigration Services and Status Resolution has been introduced in Australia this October by the Immigration and Citizenship Minister, Senator Chris Evans.

This council would be responsible for advising the government on immigration related aspects such as the policy initiatives, new avenues in detention and the national rollout of the Community Status Resolution Service. Also included are the services offered and the programs to be implemented for the various migration related aspects in Australia.

The main purpose to be achieved via this measure is to ensure the faster and the correct resolution of the immigration status of the immigrants. This is to be done while treating the people with dignity and respect.

The first meet of the new council is scheduled for 21st October 2009 where it will replace the Immigration Detention Advisory Group (IDAG).

The main purpose of IDAG was to offer advice on various detention services, accommodation and facilities at the immigration detention services in various parts of the country. On the other hand, the new council is meant to come up with alternatives for detention for the illegal immigrants in Australia.

The chairperson for this council would be Mr. Paris Aristotle who is also the director of the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture. He was also the member of the former IDAG.
