New Boat Arrivals Re-spark Australian Immigration Spat

Available reports suggest that a water vessel with 43 refuge seekers on board turning up in the rather choppy waters of Australia has once again brought the key political parties of the nation on the opposite sides of the fence over the festering issue of the Australian immigration. The government and the opposition continue to clash over the contentious matter.

Notwithstanding a recent report made available by the United Nations (UN), according to which asylum in the country has decreased to 9% vis-à-vis a worldwide swell of 20%, the matter continues to raise political temperature and invite heated political debates in the country.

While the opposing Coalition Party holds the incumbent government responsible and blames the latter for its alleged faulty approach to the issue of border protection, the Immigration Minister observes that the latest boat arrival is mainly thanks to Coalition chief’s obstinate and continued negative response to co-operate with Canberra on the policy of offshore processing. Reportedly, the concerned immigration officials had seized the vessel even as all 43 travelers and 2 members of the ship crew were rushed to a detention facility.

Coming back to issue of the UN report mentioned elsewhere, the number of asylum seekers turning-up in the Kangaroo Land decreased by 9% even as the worldwide average headed north by 20%. Even as the universal increase in refugees can be attributed to certain international matters, the said report claims that the decrease noticed in the case of Australia is, much ironically, associated with the deteriorating political debate in the nation. And, thanks to which the country’s reputation has suffered, especially amongst the seekers of asylum–many of who believe that they will be treated unfairly.

In this connection, a concerned person was quoted as saying that, in general, for individuals keen on immigration Australia appears as a comparatively less hospitable destination to turn up at and claim international refugee protection.

However, his comments do not seem to have made much of a difference to the government and the opposition in the country — what with the opposition continuing its tirade against the government and urging them to re-introduce the policies involving border protection introduced by the previous government. In this connection, an involved person from the opposition was quoted as saying that while the incumbent government refuses to execute the policies which were effective, water vessels continue to turn-up as a consequence.

Replying to the opposition charges, the immigrationminister called their accusations as sheer hypocrisy adding that while they want to refuse the government the ability to restrict or fully prevent boat arrivals, and yet, and simultaneously, they attack Canberra for the number of the boats turning-up on the Australian shores.
