New Tier 5 Visa Rules May Fuel Abuse of Domestic Workers, Claims British Union

Alarmed over the negative effects of the new proposed changes made to the Tier 5 Visa Rules, the biggest workers’ union of Britain has asked the UK immigration to discontinue the reforms meant for the Tier 5 domestic worker visas.

Reportedly, these reforms were recently announced by the concerned organization of the nation. The Union claimed that such changes will go against the overall interests of the overseas domestic workers — the reason being they could be held captive and forced to work for cruel bosses.

Earlier, it was agreed upon that the overseas domestic workers should have the liberty to walk out from their jobs and leave their employers even as they work for a new boss in the nation. However, now, thanks to the fresh immigration ruling, domestic workers on Tier 5 visas may have no option except to stay for a period of not more than 5 years, minus any right to change their boss, or settle elsewhere.

Attacking the new changes, a concerned person was quoted as saying that the proposed changes will force the domestic workers from abroad to suffer endlessly at the hand of their abusive employers, minus even a faint hope of any sort of justice.

He added that it was not essential to re-learn the lessons which had inspired many political bodies to come on a common platform 14 years back and extend protection to the overseas domestic employees. He further said that London would do well to give-up these changes and understand that harking back to the earlier times will serve no purpose, except to only trap the defenseless employees in abusive atmosphere.

A research carried on the issue suggests that out of the 326 covered by the study during 2011, 54% of workers had been a victim to psychological mistreatment, 18% workers of physical mistreatment, and 7% workers of sexual cruelty.
