Not Much on Immigration Reform!

According to the immigrant rights advocates, the White house charges on those immigrants who are innocent and do not pose any form of security threat to the United States. At the same time, the Obama administration brings about new laws that would permit a legal status to all the undocumented immigrants which it also plans to deport.

On this issue, President Obama has not made any promise to end the enforcements. However, he has made it clear that the focus would shift to those immigrants with criminal backgrounds and might be a possible threat to the country.

According to the John T. Morton, the Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Homeland Security has said that they have concentrated on deporting such people. There would be a rise in this initiative by another 40% this year. According to the Non- Partisan Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at the Syracuse University in New York, the detention of such immigrants has risen to 43% from the 27% in the previous year.

However, the crimes committed by these people have mostly been small offences such as the violation of traffic rules or not maintaining a proper conduct and so on. There were only a few who were found to be guilty of serious offences like armed robbery, smuggling of drugs and human trafficking as per the data.

A new proposal for immigration reform has been brought out which is still being considered. As per this proposal, these undocumented migrants have to admit that they have broken the law before actually being permitted a legal status.
