According to a recent report, the Government of Australia has announced that the asylum-seeker ‘Swap Deal’ may get extended to maintain for a longer period of time with Malaysia or probably even with other nations.
In reference to the Refugee Swap Deal of Australian Immigration, the Immigration Minister of this country said that this deal could shape the foundation for future policies. He also stated that Malaysia considers it as a pilot project and if it works successfully, then they will go for potential extensions.
The Immigration Minister has also expressed that they would be pleased to conduct discussions and arrangements with other nations in their region under the Regional Framework of the country at a suitable time.”
The recent agreement says that in exchange for 4,000 Australian resettling genuine immigrants over the coming 4 years, Malaysia will take back 800 illegally migrated refugees to Australia via boat.
At present, Australia is sponsoring the complete cost of the deal with $292 million allocated over the 4 years. However, the Australian Immigration Minister is confident that this deal would definitely have a significant impact on the boat arrivals. He also mentioned that the refugees will think twice before they hop on the boats this time.
