Pre-adoption Process- Inter-country Adoption!

Prior to adopting children from outside the Kiwi country, New Zealand citizens or residents have to meet certain formalities. Alongside, the child to be adopted also has some obligations to meet before his prospective NZ adoptive parents take him/her to the Kiwi country. Let us have a look at the obligations attached to the inter-country adoption:

  • Before adopting a child from outside the Kiwi country, New Zealand citizens or residents must seek the approval from social workers of the country, who have the discretion to approve under the country’s Adoptions Act 1955. Besides, the adoptive parents must also report the Family Court which administers individual adoptions.
  • The concerned authorities in the child’s country of origin are responsible for offering the permission to the minor to leave the country. The adoption must be done lawfully, in accordance with the child’s country of origin law.
  • The prospective adoptive parents are required to consult the New Zealand Child, Youth and Family (CYF). Besides, they must contact the equivalent welfare agency in the child’s country of origin.
