Republicans May Abolish The US Green Card Lottery

Those who are setting their eyes on the US Green Card Lottery system for the next year may face little disappointment. As the Republican party has given a clear indication of the abolishment of this system, if they come in the power.

The US Green Cardis also known as a permanent resident card that allows an alien to live in the US and enjoy lots of privileges. Besides, the card holders are also allowed to apply for US citizenship after five years!

The US green card lottery system came into existence in 1990 by American Congress. The first lottery was held in the year of 1995 to encourage the diversity in the country and the total number of 50,000 visas was granted by the US immigration under this system.

The green card lottery of this year has already started on October 2, 2012. The applications will be accepted till November 3, 2012, before 12:00 noon (Eastern watch).

This is not the first time when an attempt is made to abolish the Green card lottery. In 2005, Republicans made a similar attempt of abolishing the green card lottery alleged that an Egyptian based terrorist obtained the green card through this system. Besides, they also claimed that lottery system is not transparent and fostering forgeries practices.

Lamarr Smith, Republicans representative, has come up with an idea of STEM jobs act and presented it in the House of Representative, proposes the visa allocation under the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.

The Democrats, on the other hand, boycotted the STEM job by stating that the act will abolish the green card lottery that increases diversity in the country. They however accepted the fact that the US requires to attract more STEM qualified professionals.

They further proposed the idea of granting 2-year visa to the STEM graduates and encourage them to find job in the US based company. That will let the green card lottery keep functioning.
