Skilled Occupation List basically a list of those occupations which are acceptable for immigration to Australia. All the occupations of the list are divided into different categories like Managers, Traders, Professionals etc. Also, each profession is allotted points which are later used for purpose of migration assessment. These points can range from 40 to 60 depending on the demand of the skill in the Australian labour market and the level of training which goes into acquiring the skill.
Skilled Occupation List is a determiner of those occupations which are eligible for independent and family sponsored skilled migration. This list is associated with Australia’s skilled migration program which ensures the skills in need in Australia are delivered. These skills are highly valued job/work skills which address the country’s future skill-set needs.
This Skilled Occupation List, Australia, July 2012 will apply to all new family sponsored skilled migration applications as well as the independent unsponsored ones which were filed on or after 1st July, 2012. However, an application which is filed before July 1st, 2012 for the nominated occupation which is no longer in the new list will be processed regardless.
Additions to the Skilled Occupation List for the year 2012 are: Production Manager (Mining), Metallurgist, Optometrist and Computer Network and Systems Engineer. Removals from the Skilled Occupation List for 2012 are: Chemist, Audiologist, Bricklayer and Wall Foot Tiler. The update Skilled Occupation List comprises of 192 highly skilled occupations.
The Skilled Occupation List is updated each year and before an applicant selects an occupation from this list, it is advised that he/she gets their qualification checked from an agency which is authorised. This should be done before becoming eligible for using the occupation points. The updating of SOL reflects changes in the Australian labour market.
