The Dream act could not be passed on Thursday in the Senate; the outcome has put the plans of many illegal immigrants in the country on a hold. It is estimated that nearly 300-500k illegal immigrants will benefit from the Dream act. This development will increase the tax base and also will help bring down the $2.2 billion deficit in the federal government once the illegal immigrants will begin paying taxes in the coming years.
The opponents agreed that the Dream act is passed as a move that will encourage more illegal immigration in to the country. Daren Bakst, the John Locke Foundation legal and regulatory studies director also strongly opposed the Dream act.
But the Coalition for College Access president Ron Bilbao said that the existence of the illegal immigrants cannot be denied and the country is will benefit with intellectual and educated citizens.
UNC system underwent a change in policy to accommodate more illegal immigrants like wise the N.C. Community College followed the similar changes in policy. The illegal immigrant students are not given any financial aid and have to pay out of state tuition fees. The UNC director of scholarships and student aid, Shirley Ort detested the inability to grant aids to illegal immigrant students. Only two states in US offer financial aid and scholarship to illegal immigrants they are New Mexico and Texas.
The states offering same in state tuition fees for illegal immigrants like any other American citizen has been prohibited by the federal government. U.S. Senator Richard Burr said that the Dream act will in a way glorify the interests of those who made it in the country illegally. While Senator Kay Hagan said that passing this act would be the next best thing to do.
The illegal students are getting sandwiched between the pros and the cons of the bill, desperate for an outcome some illegal students went on a hunger strike outside the Legislative Building for 13 days. Unable to make a use of their degrees, they are found working in restaurants and other places for a living.
