TEF for Canadian Immigration- An Overview!

The TEF- The Test d’Evaluation du Français is a fluency test in French language which is needed to be taken by non-French speaking people who apply for immigration under Quebec Skilled Migrant Program or otherwise wish to claim points towards French language proficiency under Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program. In other words, this is a language test designed to evaluate the level of proficiency in French language of those individuals who are not originally French speakers.

A TEF exam is required when foreign nationals want to determine their skills in French language in order to be eligible for Canadian immigration, to study in French language educational institutions or to work in provinces like Quebec.

This French-language-evaluation test is administered by the Paris Chamber of Commerce (Chambre de Commerce et d’industrie de Paris) and is recognized by the Canadian Federal government as a credential of proficiency in French language as it is considered inevitable for certain Canadian (provincial) immigration procedures.

The TEF exam comprises 3 mandatory and 2 optional sections. Mandatory sections of the test include reading, listening, grammar and vocabulary, while optional sections comprise writing and speaking.

For the purpose of immigration, Canadian Federal government demands test certificates of both- mandatory and optional sections. It is not mandatory that the two sections should be taken at a time- compulsory and optional components can be taken separately. A TEF results certificate is considered valid for 1 year. However, the good thing is that you can appear in the TEF test for as many times as you intend.
