The recent bill passed on immigration in Arizona is one of the toughest bills that have been passed in the history of United States. Consider yourself as a cop posted in Arizona and you are given an additional duty of keeping a check on immigrants in your city. How would you go about it? It is but obvious that you would target only those that look suspicious to you. But what would you do with a bill that would make each immigrant a possible target? Would it not seem as if you would be harassing those who have left everything in our native country to contribute to your nation?
It seems more like a raw material for everything to be disarrayed. The basic reason behind question is definitely race. In a state where Latino consists of thirty percent of the population; off these, many are the citizens of United States. In a way, a recipe has been created to harass the nation’s own citizens and other legal immigrants who are contributing to the economy of United States. However, this would work if specific initiative is being taken to cater to the undocumented residents only.
The fact to be remembered here is that it is not written on the face of the person or the way he dresses up as to whether he is an illegal migrant or not. Such people might just end up looking as one of the locals. This would obviously be one of the main priorities of such residents so that they gel with the local population and not be suspected.
On the other hand, there might be immigrant residents who are the legal citizens or permanent residents who might not seem to be what they are. Just because they do not look as one of the Native Americans, should they be harassed in such a manner? Race is definitely not a sign indicating that one is an undocumented migrant. More so, such people try their level best not to do anything that could attract the attention of the authorities towards them. If such a thing happens, it is but obvious that they would be arrested for breaking the law.
However, there are instances where this law could be implied in ordinary situations such as a patrolling officer stopping a driver for over speeding. If the driver is found to be having a difficulty communicating in English or more so, doesn’t have any records such as a license or produces a fake license for that matter, this could be seriously implied. Under such circumstances, the driver would definitely become a suspect of being an undocumented migrant. But there would be instances where it doesn’t mean that such people are illegal migrants.
With the above instance in place, it could be easily said that the issue is too complex for one law to take care of it. More so, the police are an entity that is trusted to protect the locals. Here, the locals also include the legal immigrants. They are equally a part of the locals. For them, having faith in the police is even more crucial and vise – versa. With such a law in place, leaving the country or the state would seem to be the last and may be the only option for such residents.
All in all, time would tell the outcome of this!
