The HMRC has divided the goods into 4 categories. They are:

  • Things that can be brought across the UK free of charge.
  • Things that can be brought across the UK, however, which may incur charge, such as duty/value added tax.

  • Things that should not be brought across the UK.

Interestingly, visitors are permitted to bring alcohol, tobacco, perfume into the UK free of charge, however, there is as limit to the amount. These allowances, except the perfume are only meant for people who are over 17 years old.
