The alleged Pakistani-Canadian terrorist Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who was also convicted for the terrorist attacks that happened in Mumbai two years back will probably face trial towards the end of this year. Recently, a US district court has set the date for the beginning of the trial. On November 1, the trial will begin for Rana. The district court judge, Harry Leinenweber reached the decision after the prosecution and the convict’s lawyer agreed to the date.
The trial, which starts November 1, is expected to go for four weeks. The judge has also decided June 17 as the date for the status hearing of the 49-year-old accused. Rana has reportedly appealing ‘not guilty’ to the charges pertaining to the Mumbai attacks. He is charged with providing material support for the brutal terrorist attack on November 26, 2008 in Mumbai. Unlike Rana, his co-accused, Lashkar-e-Toiba operative David had pleaded guilty to his active involvement in plotting the Mumbai terror attacks in order to avoid the death penalty.
Headley is expected to be a witness against Rana in the trial. Rana had filed many motions, better known as pre-trial motions through which he asks the US government to provide him particular details regarding the material support he is accused of in relation to the terror acts in Mumbai, as well as Denmark. Reportedly, the government has showed objection to his demand. According to federal prosecutors, the government has already provided more than sufficient information regarding the same in the form of 20,000 documents in order to help him prepare his defense for the trial. The district court judge has also declared September 20 as the date for a hearing to determine what classified information can be admitted as evidence at trial!
