IMMIGRATION Minister Chris Evans has been facing various allegations regarding playing a trick after his department refused to grant visas to asylum seekers who came to Darwin in the hope of receiving visa.
Reports say that the twenty men were moved from the Christmas and were landed to the Darwin detention centre, and were provided the satisfaction that their applications are in the final stages and they can expect positive outcomes for their cases on their way to get a permanent residency in Australia. Just when everything was going on in the right direction, the concerned men were announced the decision regarding the rejection of their visas.
According to advocate Ian Rintoul, it has been confirmed that a majority of these men belong to Afghanistan and have been seen in a mood of anger after hearing the decision. He went on to say that this kind of anguish behavior may directly lead to procedures of self harm.
Reports say that already there have been some cases when people have tries to self-harm themselves in the detention since Friday. Also, four of them were the cases which happened at the Christmas Island. In addition, the cases of prolonged detention might leave some adverse effect on the mental health of the detainees as well.
According to Australian of the Year Patrick McGorry, delay in the processing directly or indirectly lead to a wrong effect on the mental health. He went on to confirm that instances of suicidal attempts have been seen in the past as well. Some of the detainees also show psychological symptoms which ruin their lives forever. Keeping all these facets in mind, decision of Minister Chris Evans has been criticized in a major way.
