Words can make or break a relationship! As Lord Krishna said to Draupadi in Mahabharata, an inapt word can lead to humiliation. How many times has it happened that you have been misinterpreted for your statements? I am sure this is common which has led to unwanted arguments and quarrels. This is especially true at work where ego clashes and politics top the charts all the time. In between, you utter one wrong syllable which is meant to be harmless…it is more than enough to strike that chord of disharmony with your superior or colleague.

A work place which is usually defined by rivalry, competition with jealousy icing everything around (this is just one aspect; I do not expect people to consider it as my only thought, there are positive and happy sides too!) It is a daily routine where in one sees arguments and tempers rising. More so, it is often noticed that these arguments crop up for minor issues which are quite insignificant. For instance, the subordinate has not been able to finish his work on time and so, the superior is definitely mad. Obviously, this superior has a boss too who in all probability is much tougher than he is! And so, he gets an earful from his subordinate as well as his boss. Here, the subordinate could have been helpless due to some technical specifications not provided by some other department. On the other hand, the senior staff might want the work to be done ASAP no matter how irrelevant the work might seem. And so, this middle manager is stuck which would surely lead to more confusion.

Now in between all these arguments, a few unintended words definitely come out which only spark to the already grave situation. And so, the tempers start soaring! The end consequence is nothing but an argument for no reason, only because someone in the top management wanted some work to be done.

When it comes to humans, the dynamics are quite complex and individual differences exist. These independent and thinking minds are working together and trying to coexist to achieve one common goal which is to ensure that the organization they are working for prospers. So, all the employees are working as a team. But then a few word spats here and there is a daily chore for the work to continue.

But then, apart from work performance, it is the words which enhance our careers, help us walk into the good books of people. We humans have a gift of gabbing. In other words, we tend to talk socially making niceties with people around us and yet, we do not give out too much information. So, for those who are a natural at it, some things could be taken for granted (however, this does not mean that they do not have to work hard!) And for those who have to put in a bit of effort, all I can say is that the end results are worth celebrating!

So, apart from doing our jobs seriously, there is something more equally important. These are “WORDS” which can either enhance or denounce everything we have. So, where do we draw the line?

All I can say is that in any professional or a social setting, using the right words is the key which also means to think twice before saying out anything. Because the words once lost can never be regained!

If you deal in “Client Servicing” I am sure you would have heard these lines so many times… “I want this job done as soon as possible” or what about this one? “Others can do this job in half the rate, why can’t you?”

I know there are so many types of clients who just have the habit of cribbing and nagging over small issues and making them biiiiiiiiig, thanks to their “annoying” attitude. It is not that clients are always irritating… No! We have suave and respectful clients as well. Okay, so let us dig into the various genres of clients we encounter on a daily basis:

  • Clients who are experts in breaking promises: These type of clients remind us of the fact that how essential it becomes to sign a “contract” in advance. A signed contract ensures that the client does not break his word. This type of nagging is dishonorable and can lead to a bad mutual relationship in future. Hence, if any how, you speculate that the prospective client is going to be a “word-breaker,” sign the contract in advance and clear all the conditions at the initial stage.
  • Clueless Confused Clients: Now you have these clueless people who don’t know why they have come to you! First, they demand something else and then suddenly they have a new idea in their mind and they ask you “How about this one.”? I can very well imagine your face at that moment. This type of client is completely ignorant on what he wants to achieve in life. At first, he is all well with you. The problem starts coming in when he starts changing his mind! These are those people who don’t see time and day and ring your cell phones in the middle of the night, just because they have got a new idea!
  • Third category of clients belongs to them who think that they know everything! Just before coming to you, they do their homework, think that they are extra smart and start dominating you at the first go! As if they are the pioneers of this industry and you are nothing in front of them… Just a small child who is learning his basics. This type of people want you to put all the efforts at one go!
  • Kings and Queens: These clients think that once they have paid you the amount, you are bound to obey every command of theirs! These clients don’t see whether it’s a public holiday or you are busy in a meeting… No! They want their work to be done now! Just now! Yes, this very moment! And please, don’t expect that you would be paid any extra amount of money! Just bow your head and say “Yes Mam/ Sir” Kaam ho jayega (Work would be done!)
  • Then you have those people who never hesitate to bring in their expert comments in between, just because they think they have read a few books on this topic.
  • Chameleons: These clients change color at every phase. First, they agree on your discussions, then after three days, you receive a call from them that whatever has been implemented in the project till now was never ever discussed with them. And now this client will ask for his money back. These are sometimes mean and pushy clients too.
  • Free Holders: They don’t want to pay the extra money, but are always ready to suck more work out of you! In short, they want more blood from your tiny body at free of cost! They want discounts, free coupons and every free service they can grab at first instance!

Well, there are soft spoken and reliable clients too! Let us discuss them some other day!

We share our lives with millions of people who breathe the same air as we do, receive sunshine from the same sun as we receive. We all live and most of our daily activities are similar in some way or the other. Like we all sleep, eat, talk or breathe to survive on this earth. But our lives shape by how we perform all these activities. It’s all a matter of how we do rather than what we do and may be that’s what we call as an optimistic attitude.

But here, I am really not going to talk about some optimistic thinking which most of the so-called self-help or motivational gurus babble about. Though many of my friends often recommend me to read some motivational books or attend some seminar. But I prefer to stay away from them as I feel that such talks are like bubbles in the water which sets you into a state of excitement for once but when you come back to reality, those lectures and Guru Gyaan takes a back seat. I am really not criticizing those lectures or books but this is something which I am talking out of my own personal experience.

I am sure that all of us have some dreams or ambitions for our lives which we want to fulfill. In our free time or while sleeping, we imagine ourselves achieving those dreams or sometimes we day dream about them. And I am sure those are one of the best moments of our lives when we feel that we are so close to our dreams even if we are imagining only. But it’s very rare that people achieve what they dream. Sometimes, I wonder why everyone is not able to achieve what they want.

Is it destiny or one’s luck which many people crib about or is it something else? I really do not know about destiny but I do know that if we continue to follow our dreams and do not give up, then surely we will reach our destination. Many people give up their dreams because it is difficult for them to follow and they end up taking that path which is easy and smooth. But one cannot expect our hands to be full as we have to compromise on something or the other in order to get anything in return.

My experienced elders keep telling me that those who work hard achieve their dreams. However, I do not agree with them completely. It does not mean that I am denying that hard work is not important. At the same time, I feel that with hard work, one must believe in one’s own dreams and be courageous enough to follow them. Many a times, when we are on the road to our ambitions, we tend to lose that zeal to achieve them but at those moments only, it is important for us to visualize our dreams or imagine it as being a reality. We must visit those places or do something which connects us to our dreams. This would motivate us to move forward towards them. When things do not seem to happen the way we want them to be, at that point of time, what really motivates us is having faith in our dreams and to be patient.

Of course, one has to pay a price for one’s dreams but it’s all worth it. This is because at the end of the day, you are doing what you actually wanted to do in your life. So friends, if you think what you are doing is not producing the consequences you were expecting, do not lose your heart because you are on the right track, its just that it may be a long road with speed breakers in between. But if you keep going you are sure to reach to your destination. Good Luck!

People with reading habits always look for holidays or weekends so that they can pick their favorite books lying on their shelves for days untouched. But due to time constraints, they are unable to read to their heart’s content and so have to pursue their interest or hobby during weekends. My journey of reading books other than my regular text books which I had to read to clear my exams began with this famous magazine called ‘Reader’s Digest’.

Being poor in my language skills, my teachers always used to insist on reading but I hardly used to pay any attention to their suggestion. Then one day, one of my uncles suggested me to read this magazine called ‘Reader’s Digest’ which is not a very thick book like that Harry Potter but a very medium-sized magazine. An article in that magazine really inspired me a lot in my personal life as many published stories of that magazine were based on real life heroes who struggled in their lives and emerged as winners.

I still cannot call myself an ardent reader but definitely through this magazine I have really entered into the world of reading. I personally feel that the system of Indian education is structured in a very poor way which fails to produce minds of logic and reason. There is very less scope of true learning and education because of its rigid structure of exams and tests.

This puts undue stress on the minds of the students who only worry to perform well in their exams which in turn encourages them to ‘Rote Learning’. This also leaves them with no time to explore the world of books which can open up their minds to a large extent.

Anyway, let me not get into that because there is a lot to discuss and criticize about our education system. I firmly believe that reading is an integral part of education and every student must be encouraged to read some books other than their course books. This is not just to improve their language skills as my teachers used to suggest but for the development of our minds as well.

If you are not in to the habit of reading and every time you visit your nearby library, you end up not issuing any book. This is because those thick books make you sleepy? Do not worry! Your dream to become an ardent reader can be fulfilled if you maintain a slow but steady pace with yourself. To begin, you can just start by reading some simple and not so thick books which would be of your interest. Then you can move on to some other books which you were earlier hesitant to pick owing to their plot and language style. If you remain patient and slowly but consistently devote some time of your daily life for reading, you will surely be in the category of regular readers.

So, next time when your friends or colleagues must be discussing some popular book by some famous writer, do not feel neglected. If you also wish to see yourself engrossed in a book oblivious of the world around you, all you need to do is take the first step towards it and then a whole new horizon will open up in front of you. Good Luck!

But at the same time, Delhi is also a city of people coming from middle and lower middle class families who shop and eat to their heart’s content free from any worries of exceeding their budget.

After all, it’s Delhi and it has a big heart which accommodates everyone from the rich to the poorest of the poor. Maybe this is the reason why so many tourists and non-Delhites get attracted to this city and look forward to settle here. If you go to Sarojini market or Cannaught place, you will be able to spot many foreign tourists and youngsters busy bargaining with the shopkeepers for their favorite t-shirts or books. Going in large groups with friends after the tiring and boring college classes, many college students prefer to visit such places for its cheap food and huge market. You can even purchase some local t-shirt from a roadside shop with a brand name on it and can flaunt it for few months before its shows its true colors. Or you can enjoy momos or spicy Gol Gappas at extremely cheap rates.

Even if you are a student, still dependent on your parents, treating your friends is not a real big task here. Even then, you do not have to worry because there are many food joints in Delhi which offer you the most delicious food at reasonable rates. Chandni Chowk is famous for its ‘Punjabi-Dhabhas’and ‘Paranthe Wali Gali’ which offers you mouth watering Punjabi food with Indian drinks (which are highly nutritious) such as Lassi and Desi thandai along with spicy chutneys and pickles at reasonable rates. After that you can taste the Indian ice-cream that is Kulfi as your desert which is equally cheap.  At the end of the day, you will surely find both your stomach and pockets full despite eating more than enough with your friends.

But Delhi is not just a hub for food and clothes; it has a lot to cater to the needs of intellectual minds but those who can not get heavy on their pockets. Every Sunday, the roads of ‘Daryaganj’ fulfill the needs of many students and book lovers. Many shopkeepers open their hearts and sell books at cheap rates. As I was in a metro train , I was reading one of my favorite author’s  book , ‘ The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho and I not even realized that when my an hour of journey passed away. Reading is one of the best ways to pass my time especially when I am traveling all alone. After all you have to have something to occupy your mind and in a city like Delhi, one can’t afford to get too friendly with the strangers.

People like me who are fond of reading can easily pass their time wherever they are because their best friend, that is books, is by their side. As I was traveling, I was feeling really sorry for one guy who was sitting next to me, as I found that he was getting really bored and was constantly looking at my book’s cover page. Here, I am only trying to say or express my concern for the growing lack of interest of people in reading.

There are many benefits of reading besides that it can prove to be a great way to pass your time. Reading variety of books other than our boring course text makes our mind open to various ideas and situation. It is like an exercise to your mind which keeps it fit and active. Confining ourselves to only course books and regular newspaper limit us and do not let us enter into the new and fascinating world books.

Many believe that reading is an activity of only boring studious people who do not know how to enjoy life. But I really wonder for people to have such thoughts. Because I feel that the way music takes you to another world, similarly when you read some interesting novel, you enter into the new world of the novel’s characters. You may even start relating yourself with some characters and situation in the novel.

But all books can not fascinate you and keep you hooked for a long time. Like our taste buds, we can have our liking and disliking for various books depending upon our personality. If an individual is not such an avid reader and wishes to create reading habit, then one must begin with reading those books which are of one’s interest and easy to understand. With time, the reading capacity and a level of understanding will improve taking you closer to your goal. But for that one really has to make a determination to make reading (may be as little as few pages only) an important activity everyday. Reading good books like some interesting novel or some autobiography can really influence our mind and thought process leading us towards a better life.
