In yet another stint at illegal migration, two people were caught in a scam in New Delhi. The two people, found to be the nationals of Afghanistan and Nepal were arrested for aiding Afghan nationals to flee to Australia. Their intended route for travel was via Cambodia and Indonesia which were supposed to be the transit points. This is as per the information given by the police.

The arrested men were later found out to be Anand Kumar Subba Limbu who is a Nepalese and Sayed Salem who is an Afghan national. These men are also accused in cases pertaining to immigration in Kolkata.

According to a Senior Official from the Police, this racket was using fake passports which portrayed the migrants as the citizens of Nepal. These passports were then used as an aid for all the national of Afghanistan to immigrate to other developed nations. Their main channel of transit was Cambodia and Indonesia.

The Delhi Police had obtained inputs from Central Intelligence Agencies post which the arrests were carried out. As per these inputs, Salem was living in Bhogal in New Delhi. He has been accused of acquiring fake Nepali passports for the citizens of Afghanistan.

Also, the Delhi Police was communicated to by their counterparts in Kolkata regarding their alleged involvement in a similar case in Kolkata. With information in hand, investigation was started with forces being stationed at the Bhogal area to intercept Salem.

Six residents from Afghanistan were arrested at the Kolkota airport for faking as being Nepalese. They were found have forged passports and were booked on a Kingfisher flight to Bangkok. They were caught when an immigration official suspected fake passports.

Based on the suspicion, the officials typed in their passport numbers on the software system which showed the passport as being forged. More so, none resembled as people belonging to Nepal.

To check whether they actually belonged to Nepal, an immigration official tried to speak to them in Nepalese which they could not understand. This led them to being arrested and were interrogated.

Post questioning, it was found out that these people were on their way to Cambodia in search of better opportunities for life. They had found a local agent who provided them with the fake passports. These immigrants were then passed on to the NSCBI Airport police and would later be presented in the court.

This has led to the authorities suspecting a racked involved in creating fake Nepalese passports in the city. More so, this group has been found to be very active recently. In January itself, five people from Bangladesh were arrested on the same grounds.

The security of cross border has become a nightmare for India. Additionally, the aspect of Illegal Immigration is becoming one of the major causes of worries for every country in the world. In an attempt to stop Illegal Immigration, Indian Union Home Minister P Chidambaram held a meeting with his Nepal Minister Bhim Rawa on 18th January 2010.

Other facets such as Cross Border activities and various measures to strengthen the Immigration points were also highlighted during the meeting. Nepal counterpart confirmed that issues on securities of both the countries, terrorists crossing the border, criminal activities, etc. formed an integral part of the discussion held with Indian Union Home Minister. Mr. Rawa also spoke on the measures taken by his country to stop promoting the issuance of fake Indian currency and said that their government are strictly working on this aspect.

During his recent visit to Nepal, External Affairs Minister S.M Krishna nurtured his concerns on the cross border activities as well as the illegal activities linked with fake Indian currency. He further stressed on the need of “constant vigil” on the borders.

Mr. Krishna said that they have been given assurance that Nepalese soil won’t be used for any criminal activities against its neighbors.

Coming back to the recent meeting, Mr. Rawa told reporters that views have been discussed on mutual security so that terrorists find it difficult to make Nepal and Indian borders as soft targets.

One can only hope that these attempts from both the governments would play a huge role in removing Illegal Immigration from its roots!
