6242 Cooks in Canada!

The occupation of cooks in Canada is one of the most sought after due to its increasing demand. It has been observed that the number of cooks have also increased over the years. Keeping this in mind, the Citizenship and Immigration Canada has included the occupation of cooks in its recently amended list of 29 occupations for the Federal Skilled Worker program. The best part of this program is that an applicant need not have an employment offer in prior in order to qualify for immigration.

Qualifying Criteria

  • The applicant must have at least a Bachelors degree or diploma in Hotel management or trade or diploma certification in cooking or must have attended some program in cooking.
  • An applicant must have experience of at least one year as a cook or related field.
  • Overall, a person must have experience of around 2-4 years; actual number of years of experience to apply under this occupation is dependent on many factors such as whether the applicant is married and his English language skills.

Duties & Responsibilities

Some of the duties that a cook employed in Canada are expected to perform are:

  • Cook and prepare meals which include individual dishes and foods.
  • Supervising operations in the kitchen as well as scheduling of the kitchen helpers.
  • Preparing meals as instructed by dietitian or the chef for patients.
  • Maintaining a record of supplies, food as well as equipment.
  • Setting up and overseeing buffets.
  • Estimating requirements for food, costs pertaining to it, planning menus, deciding on food proportions and ordering food supplies.
