Mrs. Julia Gillard, the Prime Minister of Australia formed a panel with three experts to re-evaluate the approach of the nation regarding the issues of asylum and border protection, reveals a recent report. She also decaled that Mr. Angus Houston, the former Defence Force Chief, will be leading this panel.
Beside Mr. Angus Houston, other members of this panel would be the former Foreign Affairs and Trade Head, Mr. Michael L’Estrange and Paris Aristotle, the immigration lawyer. The said report has also mentioned that this panel is given a time period of 6 weeks to find out better ways to deal with the problems related to border security and protection of Australia. Earlier, the Senate disapproved a bill which would have improved the ability of the government to process offshore asylum seekers in the country.
In this context, Mr. Houston was quoted as saying that he thinks the panel is aware of where the higher ground is and they will move towards the direction that will provide them the best solution they can think of, after going through the materials available to them.
Mr. Michael L’Estrange here stated that he is under no confusion and it would be quite difficult and challenging job. He expressed this view while discussing the issues with Houston.
However, the Coalition already has expressed that they won’t change their policy of border protection despite the findings by this panel, even though Houston doesn’t consider it to be a restriction for his job.
According to Houston, as the Defence Force Chief, he was involved in many committees where some of these challenging issues had been considered for a significant period of time. He said that now they got the opportunity to attend those issues and will probably begin from a very lower level to work through the policy.
He further went on to add that there are no magic bullets as such, they must work through every issue and hopefully they will be putting constructive efforts to resolve the challenging issues.
