Canada Express Entry is a system for selecting appropriate applicants for the nation’s most wanted Permanent Residence (PR). It was introduced in the first week of January 2015 and is an electronic system that includes various economic programmes.
Quick Summary
Prospective immigrants will submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) stating the reason why they wish to come and work in the Maple Leaf Country. They will create an online profile answering a series of questions, based on their skills, education, language proficiency and experience.
On the basis of the facts provided if the applicant meets the criteria of any of the economic programmes, they will enter in the Express Entry Pool, and will be ranked against each other on the basis of the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Candidates with high score will receive an invitation to file a petition, and will have not more than 60 days to claim the nation’s PR. Eligible applicants will be selected by the provincial government, Canadian employers and federal Government.
Note: Aspirants, without a job offer or a provincial nomination, may register themselves with the Canada’s Job Bank.
Why the system has been termed ‘Express Entry’?
The main aim was to fast process the petitions clearing the backlog. Hence the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) termed it as ‘Express Entry’. The maximum time period to process the application is six months. This period includes the time period during which the complete application is processed and candidate has received an ‘Invitation to apply’ for claiming PR.
Express Entry Canada Evaluation
Worldwide prospective immigrants will be evaluated on the basis of the information provided and will be ranked against each other on the basis of the CRS under which each applicant may score up to 1,200 points.
What is CRS?
It appraises and ranks eligible applicants for immigration to the Maple Leaf Country, through the Express Entry under the following factors:

For applicants immigrating with common law partner or spouse following is the score division:
- Principal candidate may score maximum 460 points on the basis of core human capital factors.
- For the spouse or common law partner, a maximum of 40 points may be scored on the basis of core human capital factors.
- A maximum 100 points may be scored on the basis of skill transfer ability factors.
- A total of 600 points may be scored for either a provincial nomination or a prior valid job offer.
For candidates immigrating with a spouse or common law partner following is the score division:
- A person may score maximum 500 points on the basis of core human capital factors.
- A person may score a maximum of 100 points for skill transfer ability factors.
- An applicant may score 600 points for either provincial nomination or a prior valid job offer.
Note: CRS is just an evaluating factor under Express Entry for Canada immigration, and does not determine the applicants’ eligibility for Canada immigration; thereby applicants are encouraged to undergo a free eligibility assessment actually using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) calculator.
