An Indian doctor who was mistaken for his involvement in a terror attack sued the government of Australia for the wrong charges inculcated on him. He blamed the government for unlawfully arresting him and making wrong use of their power.
Mohamed Haneef, the man in concern, was accused of holding his connection with the car bombings which happened in London and Glasgow in the year 2007. Therefore he charged the government for making his arrest for wrong reasons as well as detaining him without any legal charges.
Rod Hodgson who is taking care of Haneef’s case has confirmed that the doctor has filed the case as a safeguard to guard his legal rights with respect to time span which are applicable to a lot of legal actions.
Additionally, his visa was cancelled on character grounds and he was forced to go back to his native country. In accordance with Haneef’s lawyer Maurice Blackburn, the suit has been filed on behalf of his client in the Brisbane Supreme Court. Moreover, his legal team has also filed a defamation proceeding against the immigration minister Kevin Andrews of that period.
Reports say that Andrews faced severe criticism when he got involved in the cancellation of Haneef’s visa, just few hours after a bail was given to the doctor by the magistrate.
Eventually, the doctor managed to move back to his clan in Bangalore after all the charged were dropped against him.
