The Government of Australia has finally taken a decision where in family groups and children would be removed from detention centers and shifted to accommodations based in the community. This was announced by the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and the Immigration Minister Chris Bowen. With this decision in place, the nation’s government would work in association with many community based organizations in the next 8 months. This partnership would aid in the transfer of minors who are not accompanied by any family members as well as other families. These detainees are basically waiting for the results of the application to seek asylum.
With the above, it was also announced for 2 new detention centers which would be located in Inverbrackie in South Australia and Northam in Western Australia. These are bring brought about to reduce the level of pressures being imposed on the existing facilities.
As per the Prime Minister and the Immigration Minister, this announcement identifies with the need to bring about an equation between the policies of the government which cater to the detention of those walking illegally into the nation and appropriate treatment of these asylum seekers. This is because these people have been trying to flee persecution in their nation. More so, detention could have a negative effect on their overall growth and development of these children.
With the Migration Act in place, Chris Bowen can form determination of residence and put the unaccompanied children and other families in accommodations that based in the community.
However, certain powers such as placing criteria to reside at a specific address, place curfews and other mandatory obligations to keep a check would be used by the Minister. Above all, this move would definitely aid for the asylum seekers who can now atleast spend their time in a better environment which would cater to their better development.
